Big Picture I Had To Take The Chance, Little Picture I Didn't Want To
In the big picture I had no choice really. In the little picture it was a difficult decision.
I studied 'art' at MICA in Baltimore, an undergrad and a Masters. An 'artist', a painter. Or as my father told me, a starving artist. I had to, meaning I couldn't pay bills, return home. I had two jobs, as a private art teacher, and as a sales associate at a women's boutique. I turned 24, and I was my father's disappointment. All that money, for what?
I kept my personal life to myself. I was seeing a girl from high school, she was also careful who she let know we were dating.
Big picture, I had to get out of my parents' house. I needed a break. When a guy I knew from my growing up days showed up I went to dinner for old times sake. He had finished medical school, and was going to Rochester for his residency. He asked me to come with him, I could paint, and take care of the apartment. No rent, no bills, it sounded to good to be true. I didn't tell him who I was dating. Big picture it was the right decision, little picture I had to be his 'wife' figure. And not let anything happen.
For the following five years I painted, and was his 'wife'. He insisted on a 'wife' not a housekeeper. He was easy to please. By the time he was working, we had two daughters. My father was happy with his granddaughters. When I saw my school friend she was happy for me, that I was married to a doctor and had two daughters. But the flame rekindled and we were soon best friends.
I left her to go with him, now I am back with her. Big picture I can't leave him, but little picture I want to.
