I am a 50-something year old woman. Due to a neurological defect which I was born with, I have no feeling of a full bladder, nor am I able to control it in any way whatsover, and I'm therefore totally incontinent. The problem is incurable, but it's something I have learned to live with. However, because of it I have always had to wear a nappy (or diaper as it's called in the US), and have done so 24/7 my whole life.
Nowadays, I wear disposable adult all-in-one incontinence pads, but that wasn't always the case. When I was younger, these weren't so readily available, and I used towelling nappies and waterproof plastic pants.
The most embarrassing moment I have ever experienced happened one day when I was in my early twenties. I was returning home on the bus after a day's shopping. I had on only a top and a skirt with an elasticated waist, and since it was summer I wasn't wearing a coat.
As the bus approached my stop, I gathered up my bags and stood up near the door waiting for it to open to allow me to get off. It was at that moment that the elastic in the waistband of my skirt snapped, and it fell to the floor, leaving me standing there with bags of shopping in both hands with my plastic pants and very wet nappy clearly on display for all to see!
A very kind lady took my bags from me so that I could pick up my skirt in a vain attempt to regain some dignity, and helped me all the way home.
From that day to this, I have never worn a skirt with an elasticated waist, and I have also worn a pair of knickers over my plastic pants or nappy - just in case!
