When I Was A Kid
-
Gay Male / 18
When I was 15 years old I finally got brave enough to come out to my parents. Pretty much I kept it a secret from the entire world except my best friend who had been my best friend since we were in kindergarten. I came out to him when I was 12. We've been dating secretly since we were 13. Turns out he's bisexual. He likes girls a little but he fell in love with me around the same time I fell in love with him which was when we were both 12.
Anyway, I was 15 and very nervous about coming out to my parents. I figured I would tell my sister and brother right afterwards. My sister was 17 and my brother was 19. I'm the youngest. So I made dinner, steaks, I'm a pretty good cook. I had my parents all to myself that night and we were sitting around the dinner table and I was working up the courage scared of what my parents would say. I was pretty sure my Mom was going to eventually accept it but my Dad was a wild card.
"Mom, Dad, I have an announcement."
My Mom and Dad looked at each other, smiled and said "Well it's about time you got around to telling us your gay, we've been pretending we didn't know all this time and frankly it's getting old pretending we didn't know you're gay."
You could have knocked me over with a feather. I didn't actually get to say the words. Mom preempted me. The two of them got up and hugged me then sat down and asked me if my boyfriend knows I was planning to come out to them and I told her no. I had only just decided earlier that day and I wasn't sure I wasn't going to chicken out. I just could not believe they guessed. But my Mom told me they had known since I was around 7 that I was either going to be gay or transgendered or possibly both. She told me that she and Dad knew about Kyle and me since we were 12 but didn't want to say anything until we were ready. Then they told me they expected Kyle over for dinner and he and I didn't have to hide ourselves from them though they insisted that excessive PDAs were to be confined to the bedroom. My Dad was quiet pretty much through dinner but he always was. I could see in his eyes how he felt.
While we were eating desert I was trying to figure out when to tell my brother and sister when my mom said "oh by the way, Judy and Jason already know too. Judy has known for several years and Jason has known for the last three. When you're not around Judy is always talking about planning yours and Kyle's wedding. Please tell her she can??"
Well so much for me being afraid.
