I was a young new employee right out of college trying to fit in, but I didn't know anyone and so I would go down to the food court in the mall for lunch. One day this man came over and asked me if I was Jewish. I told him, no, my mother had been Jewish, but I was raised a Christian. He said, well then you are a Jew, if your mother is a Jew you are a Jew.

Well I said thank you, and went back to eating my salad. He sat down and said, 'look I am looking for a nice Jewish girl to have some children for me', and he continued 'no strings attached, just have the children'. I said no thank you, took my salad and left. The rest of the afternoon I was very upset about the whole creepy thing. I didn't return to the food court.

A couple of weeks later, I got a call at my desk, it was the same man. He told me to please excuse him, but he needed to talk to me, that he had seen where I had gone to work and got my number. He was very persistent and said he would be waiting for me at the foot of the escalator.

I asked another girl to go with me, and wait at the top of the escalator, I was going to go tell him to buzz off and leave me alone. But when I got to the bottom of the escalator I ended up talking to him. His story was the same, he needed a Jewish girl to have some children for him, he wanted Jewish children and I was young and Jewish (again because my mother had been Jewish). When I looked up to the top of the escalator the other girl had left so I was alone.

His persistence was so intense, that little by little he wore me down, until I accepted to just go out with him and sit at the park across the street from the building where we worked and talk about it. The same story, he was Jewish and he wanted Jewish children, he had seen me, and he had chosen me to have his children. Oh, and this time he told me he wanted me to convert back to Judaism and he wanted me to talk to his Rabbi.

I did not talk to the Rabbi. But he and I started to see each other, a bit too old for me, but still he was the only person I had in town. So we went out, and did things, and talked and sat on the park bench at lunch when the weather was nice and time passed.

One day, by then I was 30, he asked me why I was waiting. He wanted children, before he got too old. After the six years of persistence I gave in and we were married, and I had those children. I also agreed to go with him and learn about my Jewish heritage and in time I converted. My children have grown up in the Jewish faith.

There are days when I ask myself what he knew about me, why did he walk over to me on that day and ask something so rediculously out of this world. This is my unanswered question.

How about asking him for starters?

The other big question is, are you happy? Everyone deserves happiness in this short thing calling life.
