My story, from Alaska.
At 16 my father died in an accident, leaving my mother with five kids. My father did not have insurance, and there was no pension.
A friend of my mother's knew about this doctor who had a three year old girl and two 18 month twin boys. The mother had left, just walked away, and he needed help with caring for the children. This is how we got involved.
Our situation was bad, we had no money, and we were soon being evicted from our rental house. My mother was desperate, the money that the doctor paid her wasn't enough, and I was the only one old enough to work. We went on welfare, we moved into a low rent apartment, my mother talked about sending my two younger sisters to live with her brother, but that still left three of us.
Then she came and told me that she had talked to the doctor, that the children needed full time care, at night and in the day time, that she would take care of them during the day, and I would move in with him and take care of the house and the children after school and at night. She took me to meet the doctor.
We walked around the house and he asked me how many kids I wanted to have, I told him I didn't know, but I guess four. And he said, well you have three now, your the mommy now, we will work on getting you some of your own.
What my mother had not told me is that she had suggested to the doctor and he felt it was a good idea, is that I married him, I would be the mommy full time, he would have a wife, and I would be supported and earn my way. I got married and several days later I signed the adoption papers for the children, they were now my kids. I turned 17 three weeks later.
I got pregnant that summer, and finished high school at the all girls school, I graduated with an infant in my arms, and three kids around my legs.
With my mother's help, my husband helped her with support for my brothers and sisters, somehow we ran the house, the kids and my marriage. I had to become a wife real fast. It is twenty years now and I have a full house, four kids of my own and my three adopted kids.
From 17 to about 27 life went by real fast, I managed to get an elementary education degree, to bear four kids, to live through two remodelings as we added a new master suite, and extended the kitchen and breakfast room. I learned to drive, my first car was a four wheel drive suburban.
I learned from my mother, fast. And I didn't have time to think about it. On my 20th anniversary my husband told me he never doubted I could do it. I don't believe him, I think he had a lots of doubts. Those first years were crazy. He was desperate, and my mother was desperate, and you do what you have to do.
