I don't want to bore you because my story is pretty lame, it is just about falling in love.
I was eleven, my mother worked at a plant on the assembly line. We lived with her boyfriend, he was a supervisor for this company that sold carpet. We lived in a two bedroom small apartment with one bathroom, and he was always after my mother. He had sex with her wherever he caught her, in front of me or not. Later on I would came to realize that he had sex in front of me on purpose, but I was much older when I realized that.
I escaped from my life by pretending. I would lay on my bed in my little room and day dream. I loved Disney movies.
That year my mother's company had a company family picnic. My mother made me go.
At the picnic I saw this girl. She was a real live princess. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She was perfect. My mother took me away from looking at her and told me that I shouldn't stare. She pulled me away by my wrist as I looked back at the princess standing there with her mother.
In line for food, I saw the princess ahead of me, she was with her mother, they both looked beautiful. She was only four people ahead of me, I could see her perfectly. I maneuvered around in line so that I could look at her. She had this small gold bracelet and a gold chain on her neck. Everything she had on looked new. He hair was the perfect length, a beautiful auburn color, and then she looked my way, our eyes met and she smiled at me, her eyes were blue, her smile was the most beautiful smile I had ever seen.
When we got our food and we took our trays to sit down, she came over with her tray and asked if she could sit with us, she said something about there not being any kids her age and it was pretty boring hanging around her mom all day. She talked and I listened, she spoke so nice, every word was perfect, her teeth were perfect, her hair was perfect, and her eyes were so blue. She touched my hand and asked me to tell her about me. What was there to tell? My mother made me tell her about my school, which I hated. And how I wanted to grow up to be a hair dresser, which was a total lie. That maybe one day, I could do her hair, that I was going to be the princess' hair dresser.
I felt so bad, when my mom got up to go get a drink, the princess reached across the table and held my hand and told me that one day I was going to be a school teacher, if I got good grades in school I could be a school teacher. That is when it told her it was my birthday, and I was eleven that day.
She was so excited it was my birthday, she took this beautiful hair broach out of her hair, and gave it to me as a birthday gift and she told me I was sooo pretty, with a long 'o'. She held my hand and told me maybe we could be friends.
She was my princess, I thought about her every day, every time my mother's boyfriend took her down, and he would stare into my eyes, I would escape and sit at the picnic table with my princess and she would tell me that I was sooo pretty.
I didn't see my princess again until I was fifteen. This time it was a company Thanksgiving dinner for employees. I saw her, she came in a car with the mother and father, she was sitting in the back seat, she was more beautiful than I remembered. Her father opened the door for her and she got out. She was dressed in the most beautiful dress I had ever seen, she had on sunglasses and held her purse in her hand. She was royalty and I knew her, at least I had spoken to her.
I left my mom and ran over to see her, I stopped and held back, until we saw each other. I was so embarrassed, but she came over and said 'Carmen? right?', and how are you and you are more pretty than ever. It is so good to see you, these things are so boring, good thing we found each other, otherwise we would have to sit and listen to grownups talk. Come with me, sit with me, tell me how you are, tell me about school, I want to hear all about school, and all the time she was holding my hand.
My princess was holding my hand, and my princess was telling me I was pretty, and my princess put her hand up to my hair and straightened it out and told me to turn around and she took a brush out her purse and combed my hair. My princess told me that I was sooo pretty, that I was the prettiest girl she had ever met. My princess asked me to sit with her for dinner and my princess talked to me. When it was time to leave I was so hurt, and she could see it and she said we could be friends, and she kissed me on the cheek and wiped away my tear and said 'come on, give me a kiss' and put her perfect cheek out for me to kiss it, and I did. She told me that when two friends meet who really like each other, then it was appropriate to kiss each other's cheeks. While we shared kisses she held my hand.
She turned to walk away, and then she came back to me and took both of my hands in hers and she asked me "what about college?", "are you keeping up with your grades, you know it is all about grades and the SAT and everything". She told me, "don't disappoint me, I am going to Baylor and you are going to be my roommate, so study hard, make the grades, if you make the grades and get a good score on the SAT I am going to have daddy pay for your college and you will be my roommate'.
For the next four years all I did was study, I studied for her, I studied because my princess asked me to study for her. I got good grades, and a teacher helped me study for the SAT and I got a good score and I applied to Baylor and I got accepted. I was 18 and I did something I had never had the nerve to do. I called my princess.
When she answered and I told her who I was she was all over the place, when I told her I was accepted to Baylor she told me we were going to be roommates just like we had talked. I told her thanks for believing in me, but we had to face reality, there was no way for me to go to Baylor, I had been accepted but I didn't have a scholarship. My princess asked me for my address and she came to get me on Saturday, and when she took me to her house, which was like nothing I had ever been in, she took me upstairs to her bedroom and told me to get undressed. She put me in the shower, she made me wash my hair, while I was in the shower she took my clothes downstairs and asked the maid to iron them. She put make up on me, she polished my nails, she told me that her father had to see the potential in me.
Her father gave me a full ride, because I was his daughter's friend.
I roomed with her, and lived with her and spent all my college days with her and after college I took a teaching position while she finished her masters and after she finished her masters we moved and we set up house. Oh, it is a long time ago now that I told her I loved her and I had been in love with her since I was eleven when we met on my birthday and she told me she was sooo happy because she always knew I was going to be her friend forever, she just didn't know I was going to be her real life girlfriend and we would live together and be each other's in the dark of night. She asked me one day when I knew I was a lesbian, and I said when I was eleven. I asked her when she knew she was a lesbian, and she said the day she undressed me in her room before I met her father.
