We had to face other realities, pressed into dating, we only went in groups, we never went alone. For the 10th grade junior prom, we went in a double date with a couple of boys who we had to be nice too and dance with, orders from home. They wanted to get things going, so we escaped to the restroom and stayed there making up the story for them to take us home.
College came and went and we were still just as together as we were all those years ago. We had gotten over our aversion to our vaginas, had learned that it was more fun if we bathed first, or at a minimum washed ourselves before giving each other pleasure. We also had gotten sufficiently strong to deny pressure and to push back when we were pressured to find a boy friend. I went so far as telling my older sister that as far as I was concerned I had my 'boyfriend', it just happened not to be a boy.
Acceptance came in a back handed way, when we planned a cruise for my parent's 30th anniversary and I was asked to have my 'friend' join us, and on the cruise we had our own cabin. She became the 'other' daughter. All references to boys had stopped. We had arrived. We were seen as one entity.
My sister has come up with the grandkids. I have really spent some time, both thinking to myself, and exploring the idea with my other self, do I dare get pregnant? Does she get pregnant? We have to decide, if my sister is my example, now is the time, before we get any older. Is it that we are selfish? my sister thinks so, she encourages us to stop being selfish and give in to motherhood. This is a pressure that I find harder and harder to ignore.
Well maybe we just need to cuddle up and kiss, until we surrender.
