My Family
-
Straight Female / 27
I grew up very poor. There was never enough money for anything, even the rent. My parents fought until they broke up. My mom started drinking, and then doing drugs, and selling herself. She didn't care. One man who came for her found me in the house and he asked her how much for me. She said 200 dollars.
Joe (not his real name) took me away from there to his place, I never went back to my mother's. She died of an overdose and alcohol.
This man raised me, he and his friend Alice (not her real name). She was a poet, and worked at a bookstore. She was an admitted lesbian, and admitted it to me. She just liked girls and not guys. Alice is the one that helped me through puberty and all the things that come along with it. She is the one that gave me the 'talk'. She is the one that made sure I grew up knowing how to keep house and cook. She was a good mother to me.
When I was a junior in high school she told me to watch out, because I had come along quite fine and the boys were looking. To remember that I was not free to see any boys, I was already spoken for and any day Joe was going to come visit me and I was going to have grow up.
Joe came to visit when I was a freshman in junior college. He told me he had waited a long long time for this and I was fully grown and he wanted me to sleep with him. Alice helped me move into his room, she made room in the closet and the dresser for my things. She sat me on the bed and told me a story about how she had grown up and how hard it was to be that woman that her boyfriend wanted. She believed that the reason it was hard for her was because she wasn't meant to be with a man, but I was.
We agreed to wait until I was finished with my education before making a family.
To be on the safe side I got officially married in my junior year of college. Alice is my mother really, and she is the grandmother of my kids. She helps me with my feelings about Joe. At times I don't feel like I am his wife, most of the time I feel that he is my father. I know that I have to be grown up, and I try real hard for my kids. It is just that I want Joe to watch over me, like it was while I was growing up.
