My name is Ruth,

As a child we lived in a big old house. I lived there with my mother and two aunts. There were lots of kids and more kids were born. Being older it was part of our responsibilities to help with the new babies and the younger kids. There were more girls than boys, and we slept in one room. There was a set of bunk beds against one wall and two full size beds side by side. I slept on a bed with one of my sisters. The boys had a room to themselves, it had two sets of bunk beds for all four boys. There was a nursery next to the room where my aunts slept for the babies.

I guess I was around 10 when I figured out that my father was the father of all of us. My mother was the eldest and her 'sisters' did what she said. Everyone did what my mother said, sometimes even my father. On Sundays we had to get dressed and come to the table all cleaned up and proper. My father would stand and talk to us and ask my mother and her 'sisters' to serve the children. My mother was the one to serve my father.

We got home schooled of sorts, we didn't go to the public school until we were in the sixth grade. In the ninth grade this boy came to my house looking for me and he asked about all the kids and who my aunts were. I started to tell him, but my aunt looked at me so I stopped. I just said we had lots of kids.

When I was in the eleventh grade this man came to our house and my mother dressed me up and I was taken to meet him. My mother asked me if I wanted to marry him. I said no. She told me he was a good man from the town about 20 miles away (I won't mention the town), and that he wanted a wife who could take care of children. I said no.

My counselor in school helped me fill out the papers for a scholarship and I went to college. At college I met the man who I married and with him I had five children. We are alone, just the two of us and our mostly grown children. When I visit my mother and my aunts, I remember the days growing up and how happy we all were. Now, I think I would not have minded having a 'sister' in our family, but that was frowned upon, and anyway we lived in the city, not out in the country.
