My mother in law is a DRUNK! She drinks every chance she gets and it humiliates EVERYONE around her because she get obnoxious and is really mean to everyone. We just recently moved to Hawaii and the NIGHT before out flight left to come out here, she got drunk and almost got us kicked out of the hotel we were staying in. Our 2 small children were asleep when 2 hotel security guards brought her to our room DRUNK AS A SKUNK! She was bleeding and she almost quit breathing twice. We carried her back to her room where she persisted to beat on my husband and call me by my daughters name, but called me a bitch. Then she wanted to come in to OUR home and drink wine. She got drunk at my daughters 2nd Birthday, she gets drunk at Christmas, and pretty much every day that she gets a chance. We can talk to her at 8 in the morning or 11 at night, and she will be drunk! No one in her family seems to care or want to help her. I have tried to help her myself by talking to her and encouraging her to clean herself up..but I have no luck. Most recently she called drunk and told my Husband that she regretted having him and she hoped she never had to see him again. This is just going toooooooooooooo far. Any advice?

That's easy. If she doesn't want to see your husband again, then break off contact. It doesn't have to be forever; just till she realizes what she caused herself to lose. Then, maybe she'll be willing to clean herself up.

being an alcoholic is tough because they are in denial and dont believe they have a problem and they cause emotional and physical damage to all around and leave you wondering what did you do to make them so mad truth is nothing most likely they envy your life because they know it is not screwed up like theirs. tell her when she is sober and apologizing because thats what they do often, you or your husband will no longer subject yourselves or your children to anymore alcoholic behavior any longer until she get help and is sober for 60 days until then do not contact you or your husband and make sure your husband is clear and supportive of your decision and if she shows up ask her to leave or your calling the police cut off all contact and let her repair herself and tell her if she values her son and her grandchildren she will get the help she needs. I used to drink and be like that and 1 day i figured I cannot live this way anymore and I stopped no AA or counceling I just stopped that was 6 years ago I am a better person now than I ever was then and dont miss it at all. good luck and stick to your guns for your families sake trust me

Luckily my mother in Law would have to catch a REALLY long plane ride in order to visit us! And I actually have talked to her when she is sober and the sad thing is, SHE NEVER APOLOGIZES. She thinks that just because her husband is rich as chocolate candy, that she can do whatever her checkbook will allow her to do, and we are supposed to DEAL WITH IT. She wanted to drink on her most recent visit here, she said to me "tell my son that I AM going to have me some wine tonight"...my husband was going to be at work that night and SHE KNEW IT!! That would put me here alone with her drunk ass. So, I told her that when she drank she ALWAYS hurt my feelings and that I would not allow her to do that in front of my kids because WE DONT DO IT. EVER!!! So, I took her to a hotel and she done her thing and she came back the next day when she was cleaned up. My husband and I really love her to death and she has helped us alot with the kids and things like that. We always knew she had the problem, but because we were never really around her, we didn't realize how bad it was til we moved, and she came with us to "help". My husband has a hard time "sticking to his guns". Thats his mom, and I understand he doesn't want to be a complete ass to her..but I ALWAYS ask him "is this what you want our children to see growing up?" and "didn't you get tired of seeing her like this when YOU were a child" I think I am through. I can't even stand saying her name anymore. She loves my kids to death and they love her too. But if she loves them as much as she says she does..then she needs to be willing to make some changes so that she will be ALIVE to watch them grow up! Otherwise, I am the mother, I know what is best, and I WILL keep them from her until she gets her life together. Thanks for your advice!!! :-)

anytime I know the issues of dealing with drunks I saw my mom drink until she threw up and watched my dad smack and beat the crap out of her when I was 3 or 4 your mother in law is not that extreme but with her harsh words and drunken outburst it has the same effect, I think when people get drunk their subcontious thoughts are put to words and weather she is the greatest person on the planet she still needs to be cut off from what is important for her to address the problems she has.

You are totally right. My husband called her today and she wanted to fly out here some time before Christmas, probably near my daughters Birthday in October. My Husband flat out told her "Mom, you are not going to come here and drink one sip of alcohol, nor will we take you to a hotel so you can drink, so if you plan to do that, don't even buy a place ticket." She said "ok fine, I wont come, Im 50 years old and if I want to have a drink then I will". So my Husband said "you wont do it around MY family EVER again, so as of right now your alcohol is more important to you than your family and your family is sick of being the ones poisoned by YOUR disease, when you clean yourself up..call me". We had the phone company change ALL of our numbers cell, fax, and home. And if she does fly out here without telling us, she cant get to our house because we live on a military base. No ID, no base decals, she's shit out of luck.

good job! in my opinion I don't believe that alcohol dependency is a disease I think thats a label that was placed on it to strip the responsablility from the individual for having no self control, cancer, hepatitis, lukeiemia is a disease alcoholism is a dependency something wich can be treated by professionals or can be stopped by the abuser and when done so is no longer an issue cancer is treated with medicine and can come back without any action by the person who has it, alcohol can go away and never come back unless you decide to use it again follow me, we all have a personal responsability to lead our lives in the best and safest way we know how and having a dependency is not in the plan yeah maybe when your a teenager or in college but to drink to the point of being offensive for an adult is completely inappropriate for adult behavior. good luck with all you are doing and don't feel guilty because you really do have the best intentions.

This woman just literally lost EVERYBODY that ever cared about her. Her Husband has now moved out, she has 2 sons, and neither of them go around or want anything to do with her, she has NO friends at all..and her grandchildren are getting old enough to realize whats going on. You can't get drunk in front of a 13 year old boy and expect him NOT to know whats going on. This is the best thing for her..being 100% alone. She does have a huge heart and she can be a nice person..but the alcohol just ruins it. How do we convince her to go get some help? I don't want her to drink herself to death..that's my Husbands mom.

contact a interventionist thats the best way, she needs to be concerned with what is a stake for her to lose and I'm afraid you can't let your emotions for what she is going to lose get in the way if it's important to her she will stop
