When I got to college, my roommate was a girl from Kentucky. She talked and talked and talked. I wasn't used to someone who talked so much. She also hung out with me, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had a two bathrooms/showers on our floor and she wouldn't shower unless I stood guard, she didn't want any one else to see her naked. One night, she grabbed her pillow and came and got in bed with me because she didn't want to sleep alone. She said she would be the inside spoon but to hold her tight. I was naïve and stupid.
Every night she got in bed with me, we went to sleep spooning and woke up with her around me with her head on my chest and her leg over mine. We showered together, standing guard so no one else would see us naked. Her bed became a sofa, we did our laundry together and went to the football games together. We ate together. Over Thanksgiving break she called me every day. When we got back to school, that night she was all over me, she said the four nights alone were the loneliest she had ever been, to hold her and hold her and hold her, she hugged me and hugged me and hugged me, when we finally got into position to sleep, she took my arms and held them tight against her, then put my hands on both her breasts.
She got out of bed and got naked and said she wanted to sleep naked, for me to get naked too. She pretty much undressed me and then got back in my arms and held my hands over her naked breasts. Everything that had not happened up to that night happened, the kissing, the fondling, and going all the way with oral sex. I couldn't settle her down, and ended up telling her I loved her, I didn't want to go there but I did. And she told me over and over that she loved me.
In 1974 girls didn't do those things. Sure I had heard about this, every girl does. It just wasn't something I had ever thought about, telling another girl I loved her, not that kind of 'love' and certainly not sharing oral sex with her. I will say that after that night, loving was much more sedate, lots of holding and kissing and caressing, but not groping or feeding at the trough. Oral sex was something that happened very slowly, only after lots of caressing and reassurances about love, it was more like 'I will show you how much I love you' and then making love to her that way.
At the public library she found this book about lesbians. We read it out loud, trying to find how we fit into this. But the book was really not about us. For example, there was never this thing where you waited for her to come out of English class and walk with her to your next class. But we read it out loud anyway and read the passages about lesbian sex, which were totally out in left field.
The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas went by real fast and splitting up to go to each other's homes was hard, I didn't want to let her go. We had to pack all of our stuff and store it and we stood in the empty dorm room and cried and said Merry Christmas.
Somehow we managed to make it through college, after our first year in the dorm we moved off campus. We kept two rooms, but slept in one, we still had to keep up appearances. What was different was that we didn't have to stand guard when we showered. Sometimes we just showered together.
It was my uncle in my junior year that told me that our relationship was unhealthy, that by then I was expected to get married and he wanted me to know that he would not allow that relationship in his house. So we never went there. After college she taught school and I went to work for an actuarial company (I have a math degree). We lived in that part of town where people like us congregated. Out in the open it was mostly gay men, as women we tended to not stand out so much. It was mostly when a woman came on to us, that we knew 'about' them. I remember one instance at a club, a woman came over and asked me to dance, and I said no thank you, I didn't do that. She said BS, your as queer as a three dollar bill. I said no, I don't do that, cheat on my wife. This was in the early 80s.
We are normal, if you see us. In our neighborhood we are out and about with our neighbors, and of course came out to our families a long time ago. We get invited to block parties, and kids trick or treat at our house. We don't dress up as witches. Normal is normal, it is just getting there that is hard.
