This is a true story that still gives me nightmares. In 1986 I was in the Air Force stationed in W. Germany. In June 1986 I was TDY to Cheverus Air Base Belgium and they were putting on an air show and asked us for help.

It was the second day and I was called on the radio to pick up a pilot from the briefing room and deliver him to his Barrier jet. He was a very handsome 27 year old British pilot. I felt very uncomfortable and I didn't know why so I through a joke about his plane being able to curtsie like a girl. Then I said have a safe flight sir. He said he would but he didn't. 15 minutes later we were starting the long task of trying to find as much of the pilot as we could so his family gets as much as we could find.

He punched out when his plane was almost aimed straight at the ground and about 200 feet up. When a pilot punches out he is propelled forward to make sure that tail coming at 600 mph doesn't cut him in half. That is why he hit the ground with tremendous force.

I took that man to his death and I have to live with myself and that awful memory that wakes me up in a cold sweat screaming and crying. God why did they call me to get him and not someone else. I was the last face he ever saw and I am the last one to see and speak to him. I have almost commited suicide because of this and I can't stop blaming myself for his demise. I feel like a terrible person for taking him to his death.

You are not the cause of his death. The previous reply is correct: get some help with this.
