I beleive there is an ultimate power, but an intelligent one? No, I don't. I beleive the only ultimate power in control is energy and the power of the universe(s) themselves.
I beleive Darwin and Einstein were correct, but this is my opinion. I certainly would not push my veiw on a catholic or any other organized religion.
No, I don't beleive "man" was created in God's image (a man made idea and an arrogant one). I don't beleive when you die St. Peter will check you off of a yes or no list to get you through the Pearly gates.
I don't beleive people think they are so ALL important that some divine being in outerspace(heaven) watches and judges over everything you do, say, think and act and punishes or rewards you accordingly. Ethiopia and Aids are living proof of that in my opinion.
I do beleive the Bible is based on mostly true stories to some degree as the writers saw to be, and there are very good life lessons, warnings and advice that can be used in every day life that can be heeded to.
Am I an Aithiest? Not really..I beleive in the divine power of the universe and all of nature. It's called Pantheism.
Maybe we're the spawn of advanced life forms. The Book Of Genesis mentions the Nephilam, a race of giants that came down and entered our women to produce offspring.
The Book Of Ezekial talks about a flying device - a wheel within a wheel.
Who knows?
Yes there is! That is not only my opinion but belief. Also both Darwin and Einstien said thier 'theories' were just that, and that a higher power may very well be involved in so many things we haven't been able to comprehend. Look around at the many wonders of this world or even in your back yard and ask your self how so much could just happen by accident.
As far as Ethiopia and aids is concerned; Ethiopia was a government issue where the wherewithall was available to prevent the whole situation but the government had their own greedy adjenda. Aids is a mankind issue. We were not made to or supposed to be having sex with monkeys or any other animals, and the promiscuity of humans has spread it rapidly.
Be at the birth of your own child (if your a man you have a choice) and understand what is going on there and see if you believe. I would much rather believe there is a God and live like I believe, than to live like there is not only to die one day and find out there is. I do know Christians whom I wouldn't pass the time of day with and non-Christian who are full of love and wonderful people.
All you can do is seek Him out for yourself and see if your life is affected by the journey. God will not tempt you. He will not test you or cause you harm. He will allow you to be temted and let you make the choice and live with your choices.
Lord, I hope so!
That means that you do not know.
All I can say is maybe there is and maybe there isn't. I lean more towards there isn't. I don't think anybody knows for sure. I think most people are assuming there is a God.
EVOLUTION is my answer.
AND was not Darwin or Einsteins "theory" but their belief..along with carl sagan and many others.
Ethiopia a political issue??????...uh, no..it's the fact that they cannnot grow crops because the land is so dry for one. Also, because you think it is a political issue it is OKAY for "GOD" to let them suffer and die???
Aids and starvation about punishmentfrom GOD??
"We were not made to or supposed to be having sex with monkeys or any other animals, and the promiscuity of humans has spread it rapidly".
Where did you crawl out from a ROCK????
Innocent people are dying all the time from disease and starvation.
GOD's PUNISHMENT???? You arrogant, IGNORANT ASSHOLE!!!!
Again, humans are so goddamn arrogant they think EVERYTHING they do and say has some sort of reward and punishment...Like they are so much more important than any other living thing on the planet..like a stage that they are critiqued on.
We used to think the Earth was round and at the center of the universe.Yet another arrogant position.
Through Galileo and Copernicus we have learned and progressed FORWARD.The church wanted these men punished for heresy for what we now KNOW to be FACT.
Pantheist does not mean Aitheist. I just don't beleive in an ALL knowing intelligent being that resembles a man, sitting in outerspace judging us and handing out rewards and punishments accordingly. The dark ages were over a LONG time ago.
P.S. If there really is a GOD I will risk going to HELL than risking my children ALONE with a "man of the Cloth"
Reading is very important! No one said anything about God punishing anyone. Man has through out history inflicted punishment on himself. God has given us free will to choose our own path. The way we choose to live our lives determins our outcome. If we live a voilent or promiscuous lifestyle we will reap those rewards. If we stay on the straight and narrow we will reap those rewards as well.
I like the 'THEORY' of evolution. But what has happened to the spieces we came from? Why haven't they all evolved? Were we fish that grew legs, didn't like it and went back, or monkeys and gorrillas that only one spieces of which evolved?
I liked Carl Sagen, he was very interisting to listen to. But he did say billoins and billoins of light years we 'believe' there is such and such goin on, when we still don't know about half of the ocean, or very much beyond the moon. We learn more all the time of God's wonders don't we.
I agree. This is the basis of Pantheism. Man punishes and rewards himself "sew the wind, reap the whirlwind"
Oh yes, I read the Bible and beleive in it's teachings(proverbs, ect.).
Someone DID say "punishes" The Bible says it.It is a fact that the King james Bible and other Christian Bibles specifically state that God will judge them. Why do you think there are Rosary beads and confessionals?
To ask forgiveness from God. Hooey I say. Man punishes and rewards himself in life, so I agree with you.
As far as what species we evolved from, They have just found a "missing link" between us and apes. Two of the evolving species branched off and continued, the "missing link" died out. Much like Neanderthals/Cro-magnons vs. modern man.Three seperate species, one remains.
"But what has happened to the spieces we came from? Why haven't they all evolved? Were we fish that grew legs, didn't like it and went back, or monkeys and gorrillas that only one spieces of which evolved?"
Think of it this way. Look at dogs. All dogs evolved from Wolves which evolved from a prehistoric type of dog. Why are there still wolves? Why did some become short muzzled?
Why are there things such as mudskippers (fins, legs, gills and lungs)? They are in the midst of evolving. All things are continuously evolving. Some migrate and change form adapting to their surroundings, others die out. Look at all the different modern races of man.
THAT is MY GOD. The Universe and Nature. An unknown source (gasses,electricity,atoms..ect)and an energy force created life as we know it. That is my GOD. Like I said, I am not an Aithiest, but a Pantheist. What is that energy source? I don't know. NONE of us do. I have my belief, others have thiers.
I see GOD as the wonder of creation and the Universe in continuous motion. Not a seperate judging being that is an intelligent entity. Remember, God said "I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end" I interpret this as the creation of the universe and all it encompasses.
My personal belief is this. I will not try to sway those who want to pray the rosary and live in fear of GOD, and to repent for our sins in a confessional booth.
I beleive you make your own Heaven and Hell. I don't beleive in a "judgement day". I don't beleive in life after death sitting in either a Heaven or a Hell, according to our deeds.
BTW. Risky topic, but makes for good debate.Thanks.
When it comes to bullshit,
big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims.
Religion. No contest.
Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told.
Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day.
And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do.
And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special
place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry
forever and ever 'til the end of time!
But He loves you.
Carlin
looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. must be having a bad day. poor uninform child.
I love George Carlin! He is a comedian. Not a theologian. I believe that God "allows" certain events to happen, such as war, poverty, suffering, misery - but for a reason. One of which I do not know. If we believe, we are to trust in Him. It is hard to do so when you see an inocent child suffering from cancer and we aren't supposed to ask Him "why"? I believe He test our convictions each and every day. It's hard to keep the faith with so much wrong with the clergy. This is a debate that has been going on forever and one that is too vast for this forum.
Too vast indeed.
I still disagree about God being a "him" and a thinking intelligent entity.
I think it is all chance. Not part of an "ultimate plan" that "GOD has for each and every one of us.
Honest to "GOD" I have tried. It was even my plan to become a Nun when I was a child. But the more I discovered about the universe and nature, and saw innocent lives ruined, diseased and tortured..I came to my own opinion that I did not beleive in any organized religion.
I guess we agree that there is a divine power. The only point we seem to disagree is on the embodiment(or lack of) in this power.
Our minds are to small to comprehend the greatness of God. We all make up our minds on if we believe or not. That's one good thing, God didn't force us to be a believer, he has given us the freedom of choice. God has given us the choice to believe so that those who love him will receive the reward of everlasting life. To the statement that we live in a heaven or hell on earth, that is another gift of free choice. God backs up what he says, your choice to live your life, and however you decide to live it is supported. Your choices decide how you will live your life and how your life will turn out, but even if you are a person doing good things and making good choices does not mean that your life will be heaven on earth. God is not a man, he is a higher spirit. We all have spirits, whether is joyful, depressed, or angry. Our minds are not always the thing that determines how we feel, because we could have everything that we need and want and our spirits are not joyful. The thing is that God is not a man that he should lie, so anything that he says, he means. It it is said that if you do not know him or have not heard the gospel, then you do not know what you do is wrong, but if you have heard the gospel and choose not to believe then you have decided where your soul shall live when you die.
You assume GOD is a "him", and speak as though your belief is fact.
The truth is No ONE knows.
We can make up our minds as to what our beliefs are..but again you say GOD has given us that choice. That is taught in both the Holy Bible and Churches in many organized religions. However this concept is one conjured up in MAN's mind.
As far as your soul will "live" after you die is an oxymoron. I think when we die, we may have a presence of awareness..or we might just return from the ash from which we came.
No One Knows. That is the ONLY fact. The rest is speculation and blind faith.
I still prove my point that most Christians speak of GOD as a "HIM" and will "REWARD" you with everlasting life.
A father figure for those who cannot comprehend the vastness and power of the natural world and universe and rules you must follow in order to be "rewarded" and live in eternal fear if you feel you do not "please" the father figure.
There has always been a lot of psycho/sexual tension that's been pushed into the background with all the "Godfearing" superstition.
I tend to think the more ignorant, repressed and in-denial a person is, the more likely they are to embrace the irrational.
yes
I agree
That is an yes with no reason behind it.
Of course the subject was yes or no.
Good answer, but I say no, there is no God.
Depends what the definition of God is. If it is Universal energy and creation in itself, I say yes.
If God is a spirit that is all good, all knowing, all seeing and watches humans and all they do, see, act and think and rewards and punishes us accordingly,I say No.
I'm suprised this hasn't come up (and it may have but i just missed it) but who says it has to be a God? Why not a Goddess? It does make more sence does it not? A female giving Birth to the world and all her children. Men dont give birth, they just wiggle around on a woman, shoot some shit in her and leave while the woman does all the work. By the way, i do believe in a Goddess, i'm a Druid and have been raised as such just as my mother, grandmother, grandfather, and theirs before them on down the line. The Big Bang is a wonderful theory in my opinion though, but i do think that someone had to have set it into play. The same is true with evolution. I think that they can all co-exist because much else just doesn't seem to work logically.
Go see, O God, on DVD
Yes, most refer to GOD as "him". If you beleive in a personification of GOD, it makes A LOT more sense that a WOMAN was the mother of all creation.
I don't beleive GOD has a gender or a "mind".
GOD just is (to me). I beleive GOD Doesn't judge, doesn't answer prayers when you beg/ask for them to be granted.Especially when it is a prayer that is chanted over and over (like a Rosary)and comes either from a book (Bible) of repeated after a priest.
I do beleive in the power of prayer as "positive energy".
Power of the mind in creating outcomes/meditation.
Carlin,
A church in the Pittsburgh area was robbed of pots, pans and food. The parishoners said they may not know who did it, but God does. That cracked me up.
I guess whoever stole the stuff is going to hell.
I do not believe in God either for your very reasons.
If a man just wiggles around and shoots some "shit" in a woman, wouldn't she get an infection or have a "shitty" child?
What??????????????????????
yes
Man is made in the image of God, this includes woman and man. But God is neither man. God is mostly referred to as being him because he is called our father. You can look at it like this, he is not called out mother for a reason. I comparison with the actions of an good earthly father, he is protective, he acts as a protector, he is a provider, he wants the best for you, he guides you but he knows that you have to make your own choices and come to your own views. A mother is protective, she carries the child she raises the child, normally to suffice the child, she sometimes gives them whatever they wants, sometimes overly protecting the child to the point to where they may not experience life or the child becomes too dependent. Speaking if this is a resemblence of any parent figure. But God is the predecessor of man and woman and they are made in his image but he is neither sex. Both sets of attributes are extensions of what God should be to us.
And if you really don't believe that is your choice but I know that God is real to me.
And if you ever want to know him for yourself all you have to do is call on 'him'. Try God yourself, why go on the word of others when you can try for yourself? That's like counting on a man to tell you how sweet sugar is and he's never actually tasted for himself.
WHAT A BUNCH OF ABSOLUTE PEDANTIC BULLSHIT
GET OVER YOURSELF YOU SELF RIGHTEOUS ASSHOLE
YOU KNOW NOTHING MORE THAN A FUCKING ANT YOU POMPUS ASS
I HATE THESE ASSHOLES THAT WHEN WE ASK FOR PROOF OF GOD THEIR REPLY IS "FAITH" IN OTHER WORDS, YOU HAVE NO PROOF
ONLY YOUR OPINION.
ONLY RECENTLY IN THE LAST MILLENIA HAVE PEOPLE REFERRED TO ONE GOD AND AS A HIM.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FACT.THROUGHOUT HISTORY THERE HAVE BEEN MANY GODS BELEIVED DIFFERENT RELIGIOUS BELEIFS ALL OVER THE WORLD.
THE MOST ABUNDANT BEING CHRISTIANITY. WHAT ON THIS EARTH MAKES YOU THINK YOUR BELIEF IS THE "CORRECT" ONE.
I'LL TELL YOU WHY..BECAUSE MOST CHRISTIANS ARE POMPUS, ARROGANT ASSHOLES THAT CAN'T SEE BEYOND THEIR OWN NOSE!!!
Here! Here!
"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death."
Albert Einstein
the question was yes or no, so answer yes or no, dont go into a long explanation, who cares
Well that should have applied to the second or third answer? The question answering the question as to why God isn't referred to as a she, was just that, the answer to her question. What I believe is what I believe and I have given my opinion/fact/answer based on what I know and believe. Anyone who objects to the fact that I have my own answer, belief and faith is self righteous in his self. This is a forum in which each has their own answer and just because I answer the question doesn't make me self righteous it just makes me informed. And to who doesn't agree, that is your right but you'll never change what I believe and that's how it goes. God has shown his self in ways that could boggle your mind. Just because he small in your eyes now doesn't mean that he isn't big in my sight. If my answer/fact/opinion offends you, you have to ask yourself could there be something in my answer that questions you?
You have the right to your opinion, and your reaction leads me to question, Aren't you yourself looking down your nose at me in your self righteousness? Think?
Yes

A good argument, but that doesn't hold water either, same as the typical male's view.
One could argue that if the male doesn't shoot that "shit" inside the woman, then no "new" life will be forthcoming.
In that sense, an arguement can be made that the male is the "life giver." He....uhh...injected a new life into the woman.
My opinion: Whoever, or WHATEVER God is, it's neither male or female, but a combination of both.
Remember, by NATURE'S way of doing things, it takes two different sexes to create life.
Pretty simple.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't believe in a Heaven or a Hell, just an afterlife.I don't think "God" is male or female, and I don't think God's a person. This is of course, if Gods real.Which is really hard to decide, since there are good arguements on both sides of real or not real.
oh my (GOD) .. one open ended question about god/religion .. so many posts .. did god not endow you all with brains enough .. to know this simple yet effective post was posted just to evoke a reaction on the most asked question of all time .. MY LORD FOR CHRIST SAKE !!
