My True Love Came To Live Me In The Seventh Grade
In the seventh grade my mother invited a childhood friend to live with us following her divorce. She came with a daughter, same grade as me. Because our house had only three bedrooms, my parents had their bedroom, my mother's friend had the guestroom and I got the daughter.
My room was too small for two beds, and the idea of bunkbeds was horrid. She and I were destined to share a bed. We are both small and we were resigned to this. At first we slept like boards but in time we found our space and touching arms, legs, hips, hair, hands was solved by spooning up, which led to these huge hugs.
It was cute when we were caught all cuddled up, it was cute when we sat side by side on the couch with plenty of space all around. It was cute when we held hands at the mall, when we whispered silly thoughts, when we wore each other's clothes. My mother's friend worried we were becoming codependent.
My father had other thoughts, dirty thoughts, he thought we were having sex. Not a birth control issue, but he was pretty clear that he wasn't shelling out all that money not to have grandchildren, and he had a target too. 25. Either I found a husband or he would, and one for her too. Find one in college he told us, we weren't the first going there for an Mrs. My mother had and see it worked out for her.
But he didn't factor in that we had no intention of finding a husband. We were escaping to Hollywood. Life kicks your dreams in the ass. We stayed close to home for college, we never got to California, we got married after graduation, found our donor and gave grandchildren to our parents before 25. In the end we did come home from college with an Mrs. on our minds.
Still cute, walking our babies in their strollers and waving to the neighbors. We live next door to our parents, my father overpaid but he kept us close and it was worth every penny to him.
