Getting Married And I've Never Met Him

My grandparents emigrated to Chicago when my mom was 6. She was educated in Chicago and went to Northwestern. When she was 22 she was introduced to her husband, my father. She was married a week later. Now I am 22, I graduated last summer from the University of Michigan. My mother and grandmother found a husband for me in India, he is like my third cousin. I was shown a picture. He arrives before Thanksgiving and I am scheduled to marry him December 5th.

Whoever thinks arranged marriages are a thing of the past are mistaken. You marry the man you are told to marry, at least I'm not 13.

My family is from Venezuela, with some Catalan blood. I grew up in Miami. I dated a few boys, but nothing serious. And one day I was taken by mother to friend's house. I was the guest of honor, news to me. My engagement party. I met the mother and grandmother of my future husband. He was a good prospect, age 31, an Architect in Barcelona, very handsome, and looking for a girl of a good Catalan background. His mother and grandmother were in Miami to approve of me.

I was not given a reason or the right to refuse, how could I know what was good for me? I met my husband once before seeing him again on my wedding day. My first night was going tp be with a total stranger, he told me how things were going to be, I was moving to Barcelona, he got married to start a family. His mother had hired a woman to find a bride for him with a US passport and that's how my mother was contacted, a recommendation from a Venezuelan friend living in Barcelona.

I have my American citizenship but many Venezuelan's don't, so marrying into an EU passport is well worth the risk. In my case the man I married wants to move to the US after his kids are born in Catalonia, my passport was very important to him. All planned. Real life is different, he moved to Miami and is working with a design firm and the plan was for me to go to Barcelona to give birth. But COVID means his son will be born in Miami.
