Just Do It

My friend and I were broadsided resulting in a long hospitalization for myself and my friend lost her life. Internal injuries, internal bleeding, broken femur, hip, surgeries, cuts, bruises, and not enough insurance. My parents did what parents do, nurse me one day at a time, selling their home, until one year later I limped back to school.

Being a severely scared (my face, leg, abdomen) girl, with a limp and a cane tore at my self image. Alone on campus I was shunned. In my Chemistry class was a quiet guy who favored his side, and walked a little funny. Another student told me he was one of those Vietnam guys. I spoke to him, he didn't speak to me. He worked part time and went to college full time, an 18 year old scared up maimed girl wasn't on his mind.

Walking with him to another class, he asked me a couple of personal questions about my accident. He told me he had fallen out of a helicopter. He asked me if I had a boyfriend. Me? who would want me? Well he did. We went to eat pizza, like me he had spent a year in recovery. Like me had scars, just not on his face. I had never had sex, he hadn't had sex for two years.
