Recruiting Off The Cuff
Our receptionist walked off the job that morning. At lunch I go to a sandwich shop a couple of blocks from the office. The cashier is new, nice and polite. I asked if she needed a job with benefits, as a receptionist. She laughed but when I mentioned the hourly rate, double what she was making she came around.
She was tall, at least 5" 10', long legs, looked like she kept fit. On closer examination she had couple of tattoos, one under her wrist, three stars. The other one on her breast, her low cut blouse dropped when she bent forward. My HR rep also saw it. She was nice, good language skills, high school graduate, 22. And she volunteered she was a professional dancer.
After she did her paperwork my HR rep came to my office. She was serious, she told me she had seen the tattoo on her breast before. A lesbian club of sorts, the stars on her wrist was a record of her years with the club. I didn't have to ask, she undid her blouse, pulled her bra down and showed me the same tattoo. Under her wrist the scars where she had burned off a couple of stars. I asked what the club was. She said she had told me enough.
My HR rep opened up little by little. A lesbian hot yoga studio instructor recruited girls from the lesbian community, promised them money as models. It was a club, a stable of strippers. She confessed she had been one for two years during college. She was a lesbian, she worked her way through college as a stripper at clubs the instructor sent her too. She told me most were dancers, artist, musicians, and they got suckered in with the money. She quit, but most girls went from club to club.
I wanted to ask more, but thought it best to let her tell as much as she was comfortable with, coming out to me as a lesbian was already a big step. It crossed my mind, I asked, maybe suggested, that she take the girl under her wing and help her transition into a better life. They are friends now, in way someone in need becomes a friend. And the breast tattoos are there, and they didn't hide them from me. And they were open enough about their orientation. During the last year we promoted the receptionist into HR to work with her mentor.
