Yes, I have them too. They are not "elderly" but they are retired and have been here for a little while. The guy across the street is gone now thank goodness. I am a hard working single mom with two teenagers. My teens are forced into behaving as I have surveillance cameras in all common areas of my home, and at the front door.

Anyway, I work nightshift, 12 hour shifts with an hour commute each way. I arrived home one morning and got out of the car and this guy starts screaming at me that we are "ruining the neighborhood". I have never in my life been accused of anything like this. I walked to the edge of my driveway and asked him to calm down and tell me what the problem was. He was screaming that my little 10 pound dog barked at him through the window. Continued with his statement that "we are ruining the neighborhood. First of all my dog is never outside without a leash and without one of us with him. My dog has not been witnessed barking more than the usual "hey someone's here" type bark.

I basically told him after several attempts to get him to lower his voice and speak to me in a normal tone, that if he truly wanted to see how someone could ruin the neighborhood, I'd show him. I told him that I would paint my house every color of the freaking rainbow.

I then wrote him a note pointing out how incredibly abusive his behavior was and that I would not tolerate such outbursts again. I reiterated everything he said including the old "I've lived here for 20 years..." and informed his that his seniority in the neighborhood does not give him the right to be abusive and it does not make him the mayor of the neighborhood. He was the explosive type.

He moved. Now, the guy next to me, who is more the passive aggressive type, the one who makes insinuations, asks questions, and lets you know in a round about way that he does not like something has started. When I was having my roof replaced, he asked me what color of shingles I was going with. Since we live in FLorida, I chose white shingles for energy efficiency. He said "WHAT??? White will stick out like a sore thumb" The white shingles are on and they look great.

I have elephant ears growing on one side of the house and he told me that he hates those things. He said something about seeing them in vietnam and they stink. The elephant ears to my knowledge have no odor but he does not like them. I was out gardening the other day and he came out and said that when they bought their house, there were plants all around the house and they got rid of them. I said "that's nice". Does he expect me not to plant plants because he does not like them? I hate those plastic spinning flowers that he has in his front yard, but I don't make comments about that.

The "elderly" are <B>THE WORST</B>.
They are irritable.
They are unreasonable.
They are capable of indulging in various "shenanigans" when you are away, and if you catch them at it, they will claim they have "Alzheimer's Disease"...
If you won't let them micromanage your household affairs, you will be "suspect", your plants will be "diseased", your children will be "delinquent".
VERY often their relatives are convinced that their elderly parents or grandparents should simply be indulged, and don't look for help from social services, there is very little they can or will do.
Good Luck, You will need it.

"THE WORST" - <B>ABSOLUTELY</B>. <I>Period</I>. <u>bar none</U>.
Usually, they have lived in the 'hood for decades, and are convinced they call all the shots.
I had this old dipshit actually tell me HE was the "Mayor", old so-and-so was the "police chief", old such-and-such was the "bailiff", etc., etc.
They will dig holes and pile the dirt in your yard, they will "accidentally" poison your plants, they will collect debris and put it in your driveway, they will take another neighbor's small dog(<i>not</I> their own) and encourage it to defecate in your yard - - - and there is almost nothing you can do.
After all, they are just the poor old sweet couple who have lived there for the last --- years.
Bear in mind, that if you are very patient, time is on your side.

Invest in surveillance equipment.
Put up a sign that says:
"SMILE, Jackass. YOU <B>ARE</B> on camera 24/7.
Call the cops EVERY TIME you catch an intruder on your property. If the cops can't persuade the arrogant b-----d to stay away -
let the lawsuits fly.

Likewise, I have elderly neighbors who are a problem.
When they find wind blown debris in their yard, they habitually wait until they believe I have left the premises and then sneak over and place it into my yard, in the erroneous belief that it has been returned to its place of origin, I suppose. They have placed larger objects (like boxes, cans and bottles) into my driveway, and when they are in a more adventurous mood, have ventured onto my porch and placed trash in my doorway.... I have even observed them doing this when I once drove off and stopped a short distance away and saw them in action. I drove back and finding the old man still out in the yard, asked him to please refrain from engaging in this behavior. he regarded me with obviously feigned puzzlement and DENIED doing it.
A note of caution here: Be very, very careful when confronting the elderly. They are legally regarded as "at risk' individuals & they can claim they have been threatened and you will come off looking like quite the schmuck before you can say "Alzheimer's Disease".
If this was their only eccentricity, I would be inclined to shrug it off and move on, but suffice it to say, a complete catalogue of their abuses would be the subject of its own blog. Sooooooooo...........
Taking a page from the psych-ops boys, I bought an inexpensive white paper blind and painted on it a large realistic staring human eye. I placed this into a window facing their house. I took a tissue box, a used cardboard roll from paper towels, an unsed extension cord and constructed a faux video camera which I placed into another adjacent window. I placed a boom box with a tape I recorded outside a busy wrecking yard into a window overlooking a place the old man likes to linger and, whenever I observe him lurking about the locality, I play a moment or two of this cacaphony FULL BLAST, much to his surprise and my amusement.
Needless to say, they are nervous as a pair of wet cats and dont tarry for too long near my house. Problem solved, inexpensively.
