I Took After Aunt Mavis And Gladys

I grew up in Galveston, the 2nd of five kids. Our father was a maintenance man for the school district and our mother worked as a secretary for a one man band lawyer. My mother's only sister, Mavis, lived in Beaumont. Mavis was a strange bird, my father's description. She was married to Uncle Jack, an older fellow and a well known Tom cat.

Around and about Mavis had a friend, Gladys, who was around from the time I can remember. Mavis and Gladys shared a room and Uncle Jack slept in another room. That way, we were told, the ladies could protect themselves when he went Tom catting around looking for a kitty cat to put his mark on. My mother assured us, Uncle Jack got enough kitty to keep him happy.

When we got old enough and college was on the horizon we were told Uncle Jack had some oil money and we didn't need to worry, just get the grades and get into a good college. Gladys got me to apply at NW in Evanston where she had gone to college. A very strange place for a girl from Galveston. My roommate was a girl from the Bay area in California and she hugged me, kissed me, leaned on me, walked with me, where I went she went. She got in bed with me. It took another friend to spell it out to me.

I didn't even realize I had fallen in love with her, she was too. When we moved into an apartment off campus and we went down the rabbit hole of lesbian sex, and my grades paid the price. Mavis and Gladys showed up, sent by my mother. They were pretty callous and up front, flunking out was not an option, keeping a girlfriend had to come second. It was also then that they talked to me about being a lesbian. You can't help loving her but you are still going to need a husband.

!983 was the year we graduated, I married a husband, found a new girlfriend at the school where I taught. I didn't have an Uncle Jack to support me in the fashion I deserved. Having a lover in my life took up a big part of my life. My husband was passive about it, but no Uncle Jack. His kitty was me, and I had to balance giving him enough kitty to let me share my kitty with her.

When Uncle Jack died he left money to me and my siblings, enough for each of us to buy a nice house. When I'm alone I feel him around me, Aunt Mavis and Gladys too.
