I've lived in my house for about seven years now, and my neighbor's dog has always had a habit of barking in the middle of the night, every ten or fifteen minutes. Now I have a sixteen month old son and I seem to sleep lighter or something, so I wake up every time this stupid dog barks. My neighbors keep it in their carport, which is right next to our house and it really echos. We've talked to them about it a couple of times, and each time they say "Oh sure, we'll take care of it" and we don't hear the dog for awhile, but it always starts up again.

It's not incessant barking, but it's enough to wake you up ever fifteen minutes until you get to the point where you can't sleep at all. Does anyone have any suggestions short of poisoning the damn dog? I'd love to do something equally annoying, but not something illegal. What do you think would make them really get the hint? I can't do anything that involves noise as it would wake my little boy (since the dog does that).

You should call the cops on them.

Cops won't come out for barking dog complaints where I live. I was hoping for some imaginative revenge suggestions. I don't care how childish, just not illegal! LOL

Beat the hell out of your kid in the middle of the night, then his screaming will wake the neighbors up.

If you've lived with it for the last 7 years, why complain now? One thing you could do is get a bigger dog that would bark louder than thiers, and wake them up.

I mentioned in my first post that I believe the barking dog bothers me more now because I have a baby. The dog wakes the baby as well as my husband and me. It irritated me before I had my son too, but I think I slept more heavily when I wasn't half listening for him to cry at any given moment during the night. Before my son was born, I could just close my bedroom door to help muffle the noise. That doesn't work anymore with a screaming child in the house!

I would get a bigger and louder dog if that were possible...except the dog next door is a Rottweiler, so it's not an easy thing to do.

I was thinking of investing in one of those air horn things people use at the football games! LOL

If the neighbor wont control the animal you will have to call your local agency involved with <b>ANIMAL CONTROL</b>, the police will be unimpressed, unsympathetic and unresponsive.
It <i>might</I> be helpful to tape record the dog barking over a period of several occasions and get in touch with <B>ANIMAL CONTROL</B> during their regular hours, since a barking dog doesnt qualify as an "emergency" and so you wont come across as unreasonable.
If you keep on the <B>ANIMAL CONTROL</B>s case enough, you will get some action.

Your desire for "revenge" is pointless.

Revenge is the callow pleasure of a base mind.

Perhaps, but at least I don't have a pole up my ass.

"<I>...at least I don't have a pole up my ass</I>"

Are you certain? You seem like exactly the kind of braying ass that doesn't know their butthole from a flagpole.

Revenge is pointless because unless you try legally to have the problem resolved, you end up being the bad guy. An airhorn may upset the neighbor in question but you will offend other neighbors as well. I would talk to some other neighbors and see what their take on it is. They may have complained or want to and there is strength in numbers.

What's sad is that it's not the dog's fault. Most dogs bark for attention or out of sheer boredom.

Tape record the dog barking and whenever the dog wakes you call your neighbor on the phone and play the tape. It might be wise to put a shotgun by your door in case your neighbor doesn't see the humor in this at 3am. LOL

Oh good on you! That is an excellent suggestion. Mind you...the shotgun is probably a more efficient one! LOL
