I moved in about a year ago. It's a bitch finding an apartment in Chicago in the winter. There are few places and it really sucks slipping and sliding in the slop.

My roomate and I were at odds on which apartment to take. I chose this one because the other one had rats. The place I chose was really nice with a basement for working in and was at a reasonable price. The problem was that it is a two flat and my landlords live upstairs. The lady was very nice and accomodating at the beginning, giving us a break on the rent and telling us that we can make as much noise as we wanted.

We moved in January which was dreadful. To relax, I lit up a cigarette. No more than fifteen minutes after moving in she came downstairs and told me that she preferred that I didn't smoke. I was pissed. There was nothing in the lease about it so I politely closed the door and continued smoking. She came back down on several occasions during the week and told me that she will have to evict me if I continued to smoke. I finally quit as I just moved in and was so fucking sore that there was no way I was going to look for another place.

I was civil with them but they're so fucking nosy. Her idiot husband comes down to work on this door that originally came on the house. There's no outlet outside so he asks to run an extension cord from inside of our apartment. I've come home and he had the cord coming out of my apartment without ever asking to come in. I've been home and on Saturday mornings he comes down and knocks really hard and eventually comes in yelling my name. He's such a cocksucker.

His idiot wife is an evangelist for some church in town and always is imposing her moral beliefs on me. She walks around upstairs constantly in high heels. They have hardwood floors. She wears them from the crack of dawn util well into the night.

They have a whiny baby who screams at the top of her lungs till I want to blow my brains out or theirs. When we moved in, it wasn't a problem. She started walking or should I say running in the past few months. She runs back and forth and back and forth over the hardwood floor. She's even taken to wearing her mothers high heel shoes and stomping all over the place.

They keep all the baby stuff in the hallway at the front door thus blocking our entrence.

The laundry. We share the same washer/dryer downstairs. A few days ago I put some laundry in the dryer and had to go to work in the evening. I came home really late and I forgot to pick it up. I went down in the morning to get it. I was groggy and didn't see it. I thought maybe I had already taken it upstairs. I went upstairs, looked in the closet and it wasn't there. I was confused that my clothes had just disappeared. I looked and looked for a half an hour and saw a cardboard box that I never noticed by my circular saw, about 15 feet from the dryer. I went over to the box and saw that my wet clothes were jammed in this box with the lid closed.

The father is a fucking moron. He's very polite but is always bragging about his new purchases. He just bought a porsche and cornered me to show it off. "Really nice isn't it? He had the nerve to come down the other day and say that he was raising the rent. "They just raised the taxes and it's really hitting me hard".

It's getting more difficult to control my anger. I fell like I'm going to explode but the problem is they're my landlords and I don't want to get kicked out. They don't listen to reason. I want to say something about the kid screaming and running all day long but I'm sure they'll take offense. Becoming passive agressive. Any suggestions? I fucking hate everything about them.

Long AND the short of it: move.

Sorry, (shrug) but that's it.

Here in N.Y.C., renters have all the rights.
I don't know what the policies are in Chicago, but if you have a lease you 'should' be protected against unannounced intrusions and land lords telling you not to smoke.
However, it's clear that your land lords don't and won't treat you the way a renter should be treated, so the best I can say is that you have to move out.
I suppose I would first try negotiating with them, but I suspect it's a lost cause.
Too bad, I sympathize with you.

landlord/tenant relationships whether you like it or not are "give & take" rather than arguing about things & stewing on them , be proactive & find an effing soloution .. use your brain .. it's not that hard !
