Moved into a new apt. and everything was great until new people moved in upstairs. All of the apt have carpeting except the one above me because the previous owners took out the carpeting and replaced it with hardwood floors so there's not much sound absorption.

We can hear most of the loud noises like the TV, when they drop things on the floor, etc. but the most annoying thing is someone plays the violin in that apt. We've never seen the upstairs neighbors so we don't know if it's an adult or their kid. If you've ever seen any old Jack Benny shows where he plays the violin, then you'll know what our neighbor's playing sounds like (screeching and awful). The problem is that whoever it is plays it in the evening around 7:30 pm (which isn't too bad) until usually after midnight (which IS bad).

We've talked to the landlord about it but there isn't much he can do about it because he doesn't hear it. We've tried to knock on our neighbor's door and ring their doorbell when they're playing but they never answer the door. We want to talk to them first because maybe they don't know that the sound goes right through their floor to our apt because they don't have carpet. But we can never find an opportunity to talk to them since they don't answer their door. In the meantime, any suggestions on muffling the sounds? The sound comes through the AC vent too and their floor (our ceiling).

We asked our landlord for suggestions and he suggested earplugs (guess who's not getting a Christmas tip this year).

One of the 'cons' of living in an apartment.

However, have you tried leaving a nice note taped to their front door? You will have to give a little and hope they will give a little and you guys can come to a compromise. Good luck.

7:30 pm or am is bad, any time of the day is bad. Those people are full of shit! People have to realize everyone has different schedules, some work at day and for some nights. I hate to hear others TV, I hate their stereo etc, some people are so unfair. Why should I have to move in the hills and isolate my self for peace? Why not the noise makers go somewhere away so they can make noise and not disturb others. I hate living around noisy people!

I say you do what EVER it takes to get rid of them, its not going to get any better.

i agree. people don't give a rat's ass about anyone else but themselves. maybe sometimes they don't realize they're making too much noise but most of the loud people really don't care if they disturb other people just as long as they're having fun. and, if you ask them nicely to be quiet, they get all defensive and snap at you or retaliate by making even more noise than before. you can call the cops but there's nothing they can really do unless they hear it. but i guess every neighborhood and every apt. building has at least one jackass who makes everyone else miserable with their selfishness.

everywhere i've lived there was always at least one person who made life miserable for the rest of the neighborhood. most of the time they were far enough away from me but i felt bad for the ones living next to these spawns of Satan. and, yeah, why should we have to be the ones to always tolerate their sh*t? why do we always have to be the ones to "take it easy and let it go" becauase "it's not worth it." i agree with you, noisy people suck ass!!!

To hell with soundproofing! Mount your stereo speakers at ceiling level, buy a copy of "Sabotage" by The Beastie Boys, turn the cd player up full blast and put the sucker on repeat when they start up with their schreeching!

I can guarantee there will be no more violin after this particular episode of "I Betcha I'm Louder And More Annoying Than You Are, Neighbor!"
