My Real Mentor Isn't Who People Think

I am 29 now, when I graduated from college I got a job I interviewed for on campus. I was put in an orientation program, six weeks in several departments. I never thought I was being evaluated, I thought it was for me to see what I liked. One of the stations I was assigned to was the public relations department. When my rotations were over I was offered a position in the PR department as a proof reader (I was so out down, I had a degree in journalism and they offered me a job as a proof reader).

The VP told me in my one on one, 'you know nothing, we will now build you, your college education is the first tiny step of knowledge'. I was of course insulted. But my college advisor told me to put up, shut up, and do the job they asked me to do. I shut up.

There were lots of social activities, off work. At many of these coworkers were obviously in affairs. But no one dated me, I was outside looking in. Until one girl told me that I was off limits, I was spoken for. She wouldn't say who. But she was pretty serious, I was being fast tracked and eyes were on me.

I got an invitation, to attend an out of town executive retreat. I was invited to be one of the staff. The same girl told me, I was invited to be evaluated, to be assigned, when I came back I would know who my mentor was. Go and be a chosen one, refuse and resign. She took me shopping, for clothes, get my hair and nails done. I was 'on', don't blow it. My 'mentor' turned out to be the VP, I was asked to join his team. I was now his favorite.

I found out that the girl who talked to me was a favorite, she was asked to look after me. For the next year I went to functions with her. My job description changed, I had to prove I had what it took, being a favorite wasn't enough. As a favorite I had responsibilities, but if I was going to grow my career I was tested, and retested. Side by side she walked me forward, her mentor was in love with her and her career path was clear. My mentor liked me, but he didn't love me. I was 'a' favorite, but not 'the' favorite, not like her. She was the 'only' favorite of her mentor.

I have a great job, I'm a favorite, my mentor sees to it that I have a career path. But I know, that my real mentor is a woman, the same woman who first talked to me, and she loves me. She has told me. And she invites me to her room. And she holds my career in her hand.
