Just moved in to a really nice place. First night, I realize I can hear Annoying Neighbor's TV through the wall like a booming migraine headache. Happens three times that week. I thought perhaps they don't realize it can be heard in the other apartments. I leave a note asking for it to be turned down. A few days later (and a few evenings of booming stereo TV sound later), I slide another note, just asking them to please turn it down because it's still audible. Seriously, I can tell what shows they are watching.

I get a note today that "Apartments are noisy"and essentially saying I should get over it or buy a house. First off, trust me, I would if I could. Second off, apartments are reasonably noisy, occasional stomping and nailing stuff in the walls. But I should not be able to tell when you've switched off "My Name is Earl" in favor of the Big Game without having to listen. Third, I tried to be very polite in my note. I wasn't mad (before), just wanted to let them know, figuring they might actually have an ounce of respect for others. I don't want to start a fight! Because it IS an apartment, and a really nice one at that, I figured people would actually give a rat's ass about not being annoying as hell.

Since neighbor would prefer to be a total bitch about it, what is the best way to soundproof when you can't glue or screw in or do any permanent damage to the walls?

Aside from "shooting the bitch" have you tried talking to her face to face? Before you burn the bridge to comunication, try to show her just how loud it really is. Knock on her door and ask her to come over and hear for herself. Maybe she doesn't know just how loud it truly is. I would assume you have a years lease and I'm sure you don't want to spend this year hating your neighbor and hating being home and feeling tense everytime you hear a noise. I know where your coming from. Years ago, I had an upstair neighbor that would let her kds rollerskate in the house. It was insane! I tried to talk to her and her daughters when I could. She didn't care. So instead of yelling and screaming at her, I'd put my speakers close to teh ceiling and blast the most god-aweful music you'd ever want to hear! Then I'd pack a ba, go out for the night and sleep at my friends house. She finally got the hint. We actually became friendly enough to have conversation that didn't start with "You better...." Give it a try. Enjoy your new place, Good luck!
