Something I Want To Say, Lesbians Are People Too

My husband left me after three months. Just never came home. Without his paycheck I couldn't pay the rent, I moved in with my aunt. It was only then that I learned that she was a lesbian, she told me. It wasn't that she could not find a husband.

I changed jobs, a closer job. At work I met this girl, a secretary. She was a lesbian. And then I met her girlfriend, another lesbian, a nurse. And those lesbians I met through my aunt, lesbians. A lawyer, a bartender, a hairstylist, another nurse, and an adjunct professor. All lesbians.

No signs, no marches, no weird get ups. Just lesbians. That's all.

I am not a lesbian, pretty straight really. I met my husband, got married and did my stuff. I am here to say just that one thing. Lesbians are people too, I learned that living with my aunt.

We are all people regardless of our sexual orientation. The current government seems to want to put skin color and sexual orientation at the forefront of how we interact with each other. Most people I know don't care if you're gay, lesbian, trans, black, white, yellow, red, or whatever. It's more important how you treat others and what your character is.

I am a lesbian, 31 years old. In college I got involved with activist lesbians. I became involved with an ardent activist, moved with her to San Francisco. I was surrounded by dysfunctional angry gay and lesbian activist. I confess I screamed and yelled to. Then my father died, I went home to help my mother. A close family friend took me for an unwanted walk in the back yard. After reading me the riot act, and lying on advice about being influenced by dysfunctional people, and that I was not welcome as I exhibited my attitude.

Somehow his message got through. After returning to San Francisco I saw what I couldn't see before. I returned home, where normal ruled and people were nice to each other, there were children, and old people. Church and dinner parties. I reassessed my dress to git in, dropped the piercings and my tone. I met my wife, a Pediatrician Resident. We live in a nice house, we adopted a little girl. No one cares if we are women together, it never comes up. I am a normal human being, lesbian for sure, but normal. I understand today why people shun gays and lesbians, or rather why people shun gay and lesbian screeners and yellers, who think they are changing the world when the world has moved past them and they have become irrelevant.

To the comment above me, those types of individuals become activists, scream, and yell and think the world revolves around them. They lost touch with what the community wanted all along - equality. Now, it's about being above others and it's disgusting and hurting other gay and lesbian people.
