My next door neighbors hate cats. There are several cats in our neighborhood. We have one, a pampered, feisty little girl we adopted after our cat of 11 years passed last summer from diabetes. We moved here 6 years ago, and at first ours was the only cat, everyone else had dogs, but people started getting cats, and the new people moving in had cats. Cats are free roaming animals and unfortunately tend to poop in any dirt they find. There are no ordinances in our town or subdivision for cats, only dogs. Then my darling neighbor built a big sandbox in his backyard. He never put a cover on it. Not much of a problem, as the dog was back there. Then the dog who is old and sick had to be put down. The neighborhood cats eventually discover the sandbox and use it. Our cat generally stayed in our yard but as the yards are so small we found out she would hop the fence and wander. The people across the street have 3 cats and they are the biggest culprits of the doo doo in the sandbox. So the neighbor (who is a jerk and a bully, a whole other long story) decides to do something about the cats. He gets a live animal trap, baits it with tuna fish (which cats are crazy for) and sets it next to the sandbox this past monday morning. His wife warned 2 of the neighbors who they like who own cats, but we didn't know. So our cat was the first. She can't resist it, it's 3 feet from our fence. This happened in the morning. I'm a SAHM but I was in and out most of the day and assumed the cat was sleeping in the basement. Then we started looking for her, and by evening we are frantically calling and looking for her, our kids are crying. We look in the neighbor's back yard and see the trap. My husband asked him if he's seen our cat. He smirks and asks why. My husband asked him directly if he trapped a cat today. He showed him a picture of the cat in the cage and gave him the phone number of the Humane Society in a town 30 miles away where he took her. Of course they are closed so we spent a sleepless night worrying. Our kids are sure they will never see their cat again. The next day I drove the 30 miles and shelled out $75 to bail her out. My husband tried to talk to the DH neighbor but it's like arguing with a fencepost--nothing there but a block of wood. We talked to the Code Enforcement and the police, and there is nothing we can do--no ordinances, no rules regarding traps. So we found a harness and leash at the pet store for our cat so at least she can go outside in the backyard. I apologized to the wife of DH when she told me she saw my cat pooping in her yard, but I will never speak to her DH husband ever again. He's been strutting around, thinking he's all hot shit for getting me back for something that happened last fall.
I think we deserve a Good Neighbor award for putting up with this DH for so long. Everyone, pray we win the lottery so we can move.

As a pet owner, you have the responsibility to keep your pets under control. Your neighbor should have covered the sanbox, certainly, but they don't have to. You have to keep your cat out of his yard.

Kudos to you for finding a way to do that finally, and your neighbor is a dick for not offering you your cat back right away after it was trapped, but he was well within his rights and he did handle it humanely.

If a neighbor's animal was pooping in your yard, you'd take steps to stop it too. Obviously not carting the poor beasts off to the pound without trying to reach the owner, but you wouldn't tolerate it either.

You're lucky he live trapped it and took it 30 miles to the humane society, if I was your neighbor I'd of shot the damm cat. Like another poster said, its your place to see that your pet stays in your yard.

It is kinda hard to keep a cat in your yard... I understand where your coming from...it's not like a dog. But to be safe do what I do and keep my kitty in the house. He was an outdoor cat for a while but now he is AFRAID to go out since he hasn't been in a couple years. Good luck.

Indoor cats live longer and are healthier than cats who roam outside. My neighbor feeds feral cats and they get into my yard and kill birds and poop in the flower beds
. The cats aren't spayed or neutered and the male cats fight. The females have litter after litter. I love cats and it's sad to see feral cats struggling for survival.
Leaving cans of catfood outside for feral cats is well-intentioned, but they need medical care and loving homes.
Cat feces carry disease, some of which can be deadly to pregnant women and their unborn babies.
It's really better for everyone not to let your cat wander.
Yes, your neighbor is a jerk. Ignore him for now, bide your time, and when the time is right, get revenge.

you should get a invisible fence for your cat. it comes with a little collar you can put on it and when it is about to cross the invisible fence the collar will either give it a little shock, make a sound that only they can hear, or blow air under their chins. very good with dogs we used them on our dogs.

Thanks for the info. AH has trapped 3 more neighborhood cats since ours---one got away and scratched him (yeah baby!) One other belongs to another neighbor he doesn't like. He lied to them and told them he hadn't seen their cat after he had been missing for over a day, and low and behold, he was at the same humane society 30 miles away that he took our cat to. Those neighbors hate him now almost as much as we do. He still glares and stares agressively at me and my kids. My husband told him to crawl back under his rock. I know he will get his one day! Hope we are long gone from this sh@@hole by then!

Incredible!!! A man puts a sandbox in his own yard for his kids to play in without a cover to keep neighbors cats out of it??!! What an ASSHOLE!!!! Not allowing the filthy toxoplasmic creatures to continue to shit and piss in it? How DARE he?????
If this guy simply returns the cats to the owners, I'm sure you would not have gotten his loud and clear message.
Remember...when you point a finger at someone..there are usually 3 fingers pointing back at you.
Cats smell and carry diseases.
Be thankful he brought them to a HUMANE society instead of making them disappear completely.

I cannot believe the way your neighbour behaved by trapping your cat - who the fuck does he think he is? Why cant people realise that you have to compromise in this world. He sticks a sandpit in his yard, aware that cats are in the neighbourhood. He could quite easily have got a cat repellant sonar - easy to install and no chemicals involved, therefore safe for the cats and environment. He just sounds like a nasty fuck and got the sandpit to trap the cats.

It is a known fact that cats that are allowed to go outside are happier than being stuck indoors. To the poster who said cats smell, you are talking SHIT! As for carrying diseases, humans carry diseases along with the rest of the creatures that live on the planet - you stupid fuck!

The man who trapped the cats will get his karma.
