One Little Second And My Life Changed
I turned fifty this year, 25 years with my partner. Unlike most lesbians, my life partner is a man.
During my grad school days I met a girl from Chicago and we hooked up. She suggested a summer backpacking trip through South America. Later day hippies. Gay wasn't accepted so we had to keep a low profile. Passing through Ecuador on our way back to Miami and then back to San Francisco an older lady asked me to help her with her bag, tied together with string. This business man stepped in and told me not to touch it, he gripped my elbow and pulled me back. My friend called him names, she grabbed the lady's bag and walked forward into the police checkpoint.
The dog went wild on the bag, she was handcuffed, the lady disappeared, and the man forced me back out into the terminal and out into the street, pushing me into a taxi. We went to a hotel, he grilled me, forced me to empty my backpack, forced me into the shower for an invasive strip search. He kept my passport, my backpack he left in a coffee shop, checked into another hotel, had a hairdresser cut and color my hair, bought a suitcase and clothes, dressed me like an upper middle class girl. A flight to Guayaquil, then to Rio, back via New York.
He kept me around, fattened me up, I finished my Master's at a small private college, had two children, was a housewife for fifteen years with part time jobs now and again. Not until I was in my forties did I go with my nature, met a woman and we are very best friends. My life partner, this crazy man, looks the other way now, it took him fifteen years to even acknowledge I could have lesbian tendencies, much less a real life drive for a woman in my life.
My grad school friend was caught up in the mule set up, spent two years under arrest until lawyers got her deported. But by then I was pregnant and belonged to this man. That relationship ended that day. As to this man, he's 65, retired now, still authoritarian, pretty conservative in his views. I fell in love with him, in a lesbian way. Being the woman in his life,
I've had to adapt.
