i've had jobs that allowed (or forced) me to go into many many homes. i worked for the local electric company, i worked for a cable company, and i worked for the 2000 census.
this is what i saw again and again and again: when i would go into homes in the upper socio-economic groups, things would be quiet and peaceful. rarely would there be a television playing, and often, a television wasn't even visible. i never heard a stereo blaring. these were quiet homes. dad might be in some corner looking at the news, or there might be some gentle music playing in the background. that's about it.
in homes in the lower stratosphere, it was just the opposite. there would be so much commotion that i honestly don't know how they stood it. the television would always be the center of the the living room, and all the furniture arranged around it. the more poor the family, the bigger the tv. i put cable in homes that didn't even have furniture to sit on. that's the truth. and the tv would be at full volume whether anybody was watching it or not. on top of this would be ear slamming music. the adult in the home would talk to me as if she/he couldn't even hear the noise. as if it were perfectly normal to have to scream to be heard.
just sharing my observation, folks. i saw it again and again and again.
