In the scheme of things this is pretty small, but annoying. The neighbour behind us has a cat who has started visiting our yard which I didn't mind, but now feels she owns our house. The other day she decided to come inside when the kids ran in so we had to carry her straight back out and home. Yesterday I heard noise in our laundry outside and went to investigate, and here was the cat curling up for a sleep on my washing machine YUK! I'm one of those people who believes animals belong outside, so of course I scrubbed down the laundry and now have to keep the door shut even when drying clothes in the dryer which is really a hassle. Why do cat owners feel that their cats have a right to roam anywhere, I wonder if they'd like my kids to come over and make themselves at home in their house?

You are supposed to think the fricking cat is cute! Don't you understand?! The cat in you yard is a feature. It is a cute and wonderful thing that you are supposed to feel blessed to be visited by. If you don't like the cat then you are an evil bastard. That is what having neighbors is all about. Neighbors want to live with you. and if you don't allow it then you are an odd ball. a loner.

You and the rest of these posters don't get it.
The problem with neighbors is they are greedy, selfish bastards. They don't give a flying damn about anybody else. Only in a neighborhood of 1 million+ dollar homes will you find considerate neighbors. Everywhere else is just a bunch of pick up truck dirt bags.

ok, you just gave mixed messages are you for or against cats, dogs or whatever in your yard? Firstly this cat wasn't just in my yard, it was in my HOUSE. Secondly it was chasing after native birdlife in my yard, and thirdly cats like to crap anywhere. My kids are entitled to play on their own lawn without finding a nasty piece of cat shit, if that's what I wanted I would have got my own cat.

You missed it. I'm telling you that they consider the cat a wonderful addtion to the 'hood. You are supposed to like it. If you don't like it there's something odd about you, in THEIR OPINION. That's how all animal people operate. They think the animal is cute and wonderful. That other people might not agree is not even considered. So the dog barking, cat roaming etc. is supposed to be wonderful. If you disagree you're an asshole. Be very careful when dealing with these animal people. If you want the cat to go away then get a have-a-heart trap, catch it and drive it 30 miles away and let him out. if you talk to the neighbors about this problem they will do nothing except think you're an asshole who doesn't like cute, wonderful little Fuzzball.

Let me make clear again...

Do NOT discuss the cat problem with the neighbors. IT DOES NOT WORK! If you search the Internet about neighbors animals you will find many, many references to "just talk to them and ask them to control the animal.." etc.

I REPEAT.... THIS DOES NOT WORK!

Why? Because the neighbors expect you to be "reasonable." What is "reasonable" to the neighbors? That the animal continue to do whatever it has been doing and you just ignore it!!!! Any other behavior on your part is "unresonable" and thus makes you an asshole and the problem turns into a war with you neighbors. The only thing you can do is get rid of the animal. But if you've complained to them about it they will come to you when the thing disappears. so DO NOT TALK TO THE NEIGHBORS ABOUT THE CAT!!!!! JUST GET A HAVE-A-HEART AND RELOCATE IT TO ANOTHER TOWN.

You could call Animal Control, or th Humane Society and let them know of a "stray" cat roaming the neighborhood.
You could also put on rubber gloves, scoop up the cat poop, and put it on the house door knobs, or under their car door handles.
Talking to the neighbors doesn't work. Yet, you don't want to raise such a stink that if the animal comes up "missing" they take it out on you.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I haven't actually seen the cat for a few days I gave it a good soaking with the hose the other day, I'll be waiting hose in hand if it returns.

If you're seen turning the hose on the cat you will be forever the asshole who doesn't like cats. The cat's owner will spread the world around the 'hood to the other animal lovers that you were mean to her cute and wonderful Fuzzball and you will find the 40% of the people in your 'hood that own animals think you're a jerk.

When dealing with animals be very, very careful. put a have-a-heart trap out in the back yard after it gets dark and relocate the cat to another town. (please note, i am not telling you to harm the cat...)

You must deal with this problem as if you were trying to get away with making Jimmy Hoffa disappear. I am totally serious. Animal people don't care about you or anybody else. If you don't like the animal in ANY way then you are evil in the mind of these people. The hose will only cause you trouble with the neighbors.

Have you tried talking to the cat's owner? Please do not blame the cat for the people that should be responsible for it but aren't. DO NOT TAKE THE CAT AND "DROP" IT OFF SOMEWHERE, that isn't fair, remember the cat is doing what cats do, the fault is with the animal's owners. If you do take it, please take to a no kill shelter. I have cats and like them but, I understand that they are my responsiblity and mine don't wander the neighborhood because I know not everyone has the same feelings about them as I do. Using the hose on him sounds like a good non-harmful way to "persuade" the cat to stay out of your yard, keep trying that for awhile and see where you get. But please remember, it is not the cat's fault, it is the owners who just don't care. I'll bet their children and house aren't well taken care of either.

The previous post is from one of the "just talk to them" people. This is a trap! For the 15th time:

TALKING TO PEOPLE WITH ANIMALS IS **NO MORE EFFECTIVE** THEN TALKING DIRECTLY TO THE ANIMAL !!!!

And is worse. Here's what happens when you "just talk to" a pet owner:

First Conversation:

You: "Hi, your cat comes into my yard. Would you please, pretty please with suger on top keep the cat out of my yard?"

They: "What cat? Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize the cat was in your yard. Please forgive me, I want to be a good neighbor. I'm a wonderful person, after all. I'll take care of it right away."

"Wow!! That was easy." you think to yourself as you go back home. What action will this wonderful neighbor take? He will confront Fuzzball about the treaspass and say in a stern voice "Fuzzball! Don't go into the neighbors yard! Bad cat! Stay in your own yard!"

The next day Fuzzball will be in your yard again and sit on your washing machine.

So you **are forced** to have conversation two:

You: "Hi, your cat comes into my yard. Would you please, pretty please with suger on top keep the cat out of my yard?"

They: "Oh, he did? He just stays for a little while. Don't you like cats? I'll stop him." They close the door in the middle of the conversation while acting like you're a pest.

Action they take after conversation two? None. The next day the cat's in your yard and sitting on your washing machine.

So you **are forced** to have conversation three:

You: "Hi, your cat comes into my yard. Would you please, pretty please with suger on top keep the cat out of my yard?"

They: "Listen, cats roam. What do you want me to do about it? You hate cats don't you? I've talked to several people in the neighborhood and they all say you're a cat hating asshole. Get off my property asshole!" Boom, the door slams in your face.

Action they take after conversation three? Encourage the cat to go into your yard as often as possible because you, my dear, are the neighborhood cat-hating psycho-jerk neighbor from hell!

This is how "just talking to" ANY animal owner about ANYTHING that they do. Barking, roaming, using your yard as the toilet, it doesn't matter. This is how all animal people act. They are no different, no better than the animals they lie down with.

Repeat: BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL WHEN DEALING WITH THESE ANIMAL PEOPLE! "JUST TALKING TO THEM" IS JUST PLAIN CRAZY! IT DOES NOT WORK AND CAUSES THE SITUATION TO TURN INTO A WAR.

NOTICE ALSO THAT **THEY, NOT YOU*** HAVE DECIDED TO TURN THIS INTO A FIGHT. YOU, IN ALL THREE CONVERSATIONS HAVE ONLY SAID: "Hi, your cat comes into my yard. Would you please, pretty please with suger on top keep the cat out of my yard?"

You have two choices, and only two choices: Ignore it or get a have-a-heart trap and relocate the animal.

"JUST TALKING TO THEM" WILL NOT WORK!!!

I agree animals belong inside, in their own bloody houses. Anyway the cat has snuck back twice recently, the first time i took a cup of water with me and she bolted, the second time i only had to tell her to go home and she bolted. Smart cat she obviously associates me with water, hopefully they'll be no more problems now.

You are absolutely right! "Dropping" the cat off somewhere is cruel to the cat. Irresponsible pet owners and irresponsible parents - 2 things the world unfortunately is full of.

It's me again, post 512, I just wanted to say that I'm glad the water trick is working, I'm glad that at least you are reasonable about the cat and not cruel as some of these posters seem to be. When I said talk to the owner, I would and have reminded people that they are responsible for the behavior of their animals, and have found that if you call the Animal Control Warden and give the owner's name, they may face charges for not properly securing their pet. Anyway, let me say again that as a cat owner I do not let them wander and when one of them gets out if I were to get a compliant, I would go out of my way to keep them inside. Actually my cats spend 98% of their time inside, they only go outside with me, I make them stay in my yard, and when I go in, so do they. My worry is that the poster with the lengthy cat owner conversation, or someone like him would resort to being cruel to the cat.

Geta water gun or keep using the hose. The water does no harm to the cat and eventually the cat will relize that your yard is the "bad-water-place" and won't return. Even if the owner complains you have every right to do so. Your property and all, tresspassing animals get sprayed. bottom line. I agree that talking to the owner will do no good. This is between you and the cat. I think the kidnap-and-ditch solutionis extremly cruel to the animal and the owner.
From what you posted it seems the water trick is working, good luck.

Madam: I advised the original poster several times to "get a have-a-heart trap and relocate the animal."

At no time have I or do I advocate hurting the cat or any other animal.

I've had several encounters with enlighted animal owners.
My findings are always the same. Like in the movie "As Good as it Gets", Jack Nicholson's neighbor is angry that Jack doesn't like the dog and totally ignores the simple fact that the reason Jack Nicholson's character doesn't like the dog is because it URINATES IN THE LOBBY AND IT'S OWNER (no surprise to me), DOESN'T GIVE A DAMN!

The ONLY reason ANYONE would resort to covertly removing the animal is that the polite conversation with animal owners is a complete waste of time.

Please notice this cat owner's response (above) and let me explain it to you.

She says:
"I'm glad that at least you are reasonable about the cat and not cruel as some of these posters seem to be."

Notice in a previous post that I told you that all animal owners expect you to be "reasonable" about the animal. Remember "reasonable" to an animal owner means you just ignore it and you get a life. Anything else makes you unresonable and "cruel."

Next she says:

"I do not let them wander and when one of them gets out if I were to get a compliant, I would go out of my way to keep them inside."

Here she repeats that she's a wonderful person but that she lets the cats (why do animal people insist on having several!?) roam until she gets a "complaint." This is the age hold trick of letting the animal do anything it wants and hope nobody complains. And if you do complain you are an evil cat-hating bastard. As we see from the next comment:

"someone like [anyone who doesn't like my cat in his yard] would resort to being cruel to the cat."

Nobody has suggested being cruel to the cat. Notice also the use of the word "resort." The only time anybody would "resort" to anything is if the civil way didn't work. This women knows by use of the word "resort" that NOTHING her neighbor did short of shooting the cats is going to work. Animal people car FAR more for the animal than they do for ANY neighbor. That fact is so obvious I feel a little silly having to state it.

Repeat:

Animal people think the animal is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and anyone who disagrees is a cruel animal hating, animal killing bastard.

TALKING TO ANIMAL OWNERS IS NO MORE EFFECTIVE THAN TALKING TO THE ANIMAL. THEY ALL THINK THEY ARE WONDERFUL REASONABLE PEOPLE AND ANYONE WHO COMPLAINS IS AN UNREASONABLE ANIMAL HATING BASTARD. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS CALLING ANIMAL CONTROL OR USING A HAVE-A-HEART TRAP TO CAPTURE THE ****TREASPASSING**** ANIMAL AND RELOCATE THE ANIMAL FAR ENOUGH AWAY THAT IT CAN'T FIND ITS WAY BACK. TALKING TO ENLIGHTENED, CONCERNED, WONDERFUL ANIMAL PEOPLE WILL ONLY GET YOU IN A WAR WITH YOUR NEIGHBOR WHO WILL BROADCAST TO THE OTHER ANIMAL OWNERS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD WHAT A CAT-HATING-NEIGHBOR-FROM-HELL YOU ARE.

First of all I'm not a woman, second of all when you say "transport" the cat to where? Someone else's neighborhood? So just shove the problem on someone else. Now, let me clarify when I said that they only went outside with me, what that means is I don't let them leave the yard, when I am ready to go in I put them inside. Sometimes one of the little shits will go in the neighbors yard, so I go get it, I'm the person who actually goes around the neighborhood until I get my cat and put him inside. My neighbors look at me like I'm crazy for getting them when they get away. They have cats that just live in their yard having litter of kittens one right after the other, those are the owners that are the problems. And yes if my cat went into someones yard, remember I go and get them, and they were to come to me and complain, I would appologize and the cat that went next door wouldn't get to go out again. I even put a fence up to keep the cats from going next door. You assume that because I have cats that I just think it's ok for them to wander, you appear to have read my post, but I guess you read what you wanted to into it. Again let me clarify, my cats go out in my yard when I go out, when I go in, they all go in with me. I also have problems with my neighbors who let their cats go into my yard, no I don't think its all right, but again let me say that it is the owners fault. If as a last resort you want to use one of those humane traps for the cat, don't just make it someone else's problem take it to a shelter. Again, the original poster never said if she talked to the neighbor, so the neighbor might not even know the cat is doing that.

Me again forgot something else, some cities don't have laws concerning control of cats, most do for dogs but usually not for cats, so if you were to trap the cat that you know and everyone else in the neighborhood knows belongs to someone, than you might be breaking the law, seen as "stealing someone's personal property" so if you do go that route just be careful. And please don't just drive "30 miles away" and dump it, because a] it's not fair to do that to someone else;
b] it's not fair to the cat'
c] it may even be illegal; and
d] cats have a good sense of direction and it will probably find its way home.

If you dont want animals in you yard, build a freaking fence. Contrary to the belief of most morons, cats dont crap in the middle of your yard like a dog would, cats bury all of their eliminations. If you spray the cat with water it will, eventually, not go into your yard. The reason there are not any laws against cats roaming is because they are freaking harmless. I can't believe how many uptight assholes live in our neighborhoods. I recently moved and it took all of one week for me to hate my neighbor. Instead of talking tou us she just left a nasty note on our door. This passive aggressive adolescent bullshit made me hate her before i've even spoken one word to her. She is worried that the cat is going to scratch her daughters brand new car???? And that the cats are chasing squirrels in her yard??? Since when does anyone give a shit about a tree rat?? This ebonics writing moron actually wrote, "Unfortunately, it was no damage." What the fuck does that mean? That has to be the most incomprehensible collection of words ever assembled. Why would a cat scratch a car??? How would a cat scratch a car?? They walk with their claws retracted, and there would be no reason why a cat would just start scratching a car. Do you even think that would feel good??? Stupid ebonics bitch.

you wanna get rid of kitty? feed him some alka seltzer or a nice big bowl of antifreeze. that works for all the stray animals that roam my apartment complex. it seems like a cruel thing to do, but you are actually helping the cat because otherwise he could be hit by a car or starved to death
