I hate the people who live on the street behind me. We own a double lot, so our backyard is huge and goes clear back to the street behind us. Every kid in the neighborhood thinks it's just an empty field and they all play football, baseball, etc., back there. I do not mind that one bit. However, when my own children go back there today play, sometimes there are obnoxious kids back there all over our swing set and eagle's nest. That's the part I don't like. I also don't like EVERYONE walking their dog OUT of their yard and INTO my backyard (aka the empty field) to take a shit. I have watched it from my windows dozens of times. I have decided that from this point forward, any person I see bringing their dog to MY yard to shit is quite rightly going to be eating that same shit within minutes. Anyway, long story short, the neighbors behind us have a 7-year-old bratty, no wait, a DOUBLE BRATTY, kid who is constantly in my backyard and he picks fights and spits on whoever he can back there, including my kids. My 13-year-old son and about five friends went back there to start a game of football the other day and their bratty kid comes up and starts running through their game and spitting and cussing, etc. All the while, his PIG of a mother is sitting on her front porch watching. My son yelled at him to get away and get out of the yard. His mother comes up, yells at my kid that "he's only seven, leave him alone." I wasn't home at the time it happened. I have had a confrontation with her before when I went into my backyard and told her son to leave because he was fighting and spitting. He just told me, "this isn't your yard" and his mother walked up. I told her I have been watching him attack another kid and that there is no fighting allowed in my yard. She told me that she told her son to go up and kick the other kid's ass because they have been having trouble at school and thatI didn't know the whole story. I said that I didn't know about that and that I didn't care about that, but there was no fighting OR cussing in my yard. Everytime I see him back there, I open my sliding door and tell him to get out. He leaves, but then is back minutes later with his PIG mom sitting on the porch just waiting......

They are trashy, and they would gladly welcome a fist fight, I think.... I have no interest in losing any teeth or hair, but at this point, I have no idea what to do. And, to make matters worse, the dad is every bit of 6'5" and resembles Mr. Clean. While my husband is not a "nancy-boy" and could hold his own, I still don't want to see any part of a fight with a man that size... (secretly, I think I could clean the floor with the wife, ha ha ). We would love to put up a privacy fence, but at an expense of around $6,000. I certainly don't have an extra 6K lying around. What do I do short of a fence? If I put "private property, keep off" signs out there, they will no doubt rip them out, plus I don't want to become the "mean lady" in the brick house.....

You are going to have to be the "Mean Lady". Don't put up a fence, put up a wall.

It is often VERY difficult to get people to respect private property rights. There isn't any way that you can police your yard constantly without a barrier of some sort. Even with a wall (that is within height restrictions of most city ordinances) people will throw trash over and it still wouldn't be too surprising to occasionally find blatant trespassers on your property. It will, however, alleviate the problem of stray dogs.... You are still responsible for keeping the area OUTSIDE your wall/fence/barrier clean and free of weeds and debris, so street access of some sort is almost a necessity as well. This gate will need to be locked up from the inside or padlocked. Unfortunately, you ARE looking at some considerable expense to enjoy the privacy of your own yard.

Next time you need to walk out there, walk over to the mother and say, "Lady, the next time your kid comes in MY yard and starts messing with MY kids, I'm gonna come over here, drag your fat ass out of your chair and kick it up and down the street. This will happen each time your kid shows up in my yard and starts harassing my kids. Either get your little brat under control or I'm coming after you." That always worked for my parents and more often than not the people listened.

Put a fence up if you want to keep people off your property.
I would walk my dog on an empty lot that I didn't know belonged one of my neighbors. Put up a FENCE. Duh!

It is clearly obvious that it is my yard, at least I think so. We have a swing set on it, we have an eagle's nest on it, and we mow it and rake it and take care of it.... DUH.

Unfortunately, talk is cheap and action is criminally expensive.

(Sigh-) Your children's swing set will be destroyed(or stolen), the yard a desert - if you don't get some kind of barrier up to demarcate your property - and soon. Do you understand the legal concept of an implied easement? If not, you had better look it up.

You gotta get tough if you want respect and your yard back. I'd slap the piss out of the bitch with the spoiled brat. In the world we live in,we have to demand respect. You have to prepare yourself to go for all the money, marbles and chalk, never back up and never give up. You gotta do what you gotta do. As far as the dogs shittin in your yard,i'd give them one warning and then start blasting, use a shotgun, and shoot them in the belly, they'll generally make it home to die on the step,it will save you the trouble of digging a hole. When the word gets out that you are bad to the bone, your neighbors won't fuck with you ever again. I've done all of the above and now my neighbors come around me with their hat in their hand and a lot of respect. Signed, THE BADDEST CAT IN THE ALLEY

ANOTHER victim of too many "action movies".... You start brandishing weapons in any nominally decent neighborhood and you will have SWAT teams modifying your sense of "entitlement" rather quickly. Then you can have a lot of time to reflect on your folly in jail or a mental institution.

But guns are fun.
And blood is pretty.

Put up a warning sign.
Set a few well hidden traps.
Show your kids where they are.
Wear earplugs.

How about an Invisible Fence and the biggest, badest, PROTECTIVE, Rottweiller you can find. It would be protective of the family, as well as your property. If the kid has the guts to come on the property with that, just think, you won't have to feed the dog for at least a week! If the fat ass mom comes over, maybe a month.

Oh yeah, take the dogs shit and put it on the neighbors yard.

Invest in a paintball gun for your son and an extra long waterhose for yourself. They work wonders. After the kid comes home with welts the size of quarters, I don't think he'll return. And if the mom raises hell, eh. Kids will be kids, right? XD
