Sometimes Your Called, Sometimes You Go
Here's the sad part first. My coworker, a thirty four year old man, was nice, competent but alone. I grew up with a close family (Chinese American) and it bothered me a lot that he didn't have anyone. Until one day, after pestering him, he told me had been married a long time ago, but his wife and son had died in an accident. He didn't share any details. With the internet you can find stuff and I researched the newspapers in the town where he used to live and found a short police report of an accident ten years earlier where a woman and child had died but the driver survived.
Something happened to me, I wanted to be his company, to cook him dinner. I couldn't sleep knowing he was alone in bed when I was there. I fixed cookies, brought him a home cooked lunch. He was nice but he remained distant. One day while eating lunch with him I told him I was available, I was single, fertile, and ready to start a family. He stood up, said thank you and left.
I did what I had to do. Whether he knew it or not he needed a wife and it was going to be me. It took a long time, more than a year. I offered to sacrifice myself on the virgin altar, I showed him I could cook and clean, I was good with money. And I showed him a note from my doctor that I was a fertile female. He gave in. And a year later I presented him with a baby boy.
My husband is not alone, he has a wife and two sons. But his loss of when he was young doesn't go away, sometimes he cries at night. Sometimes he's withdrawn. No one can say what losing a wife and child can do to a man. All I can do is be his wife right now.
