Put In My Place By Those I Thought Were Beneath Me

I'm Cuban American, I studied at the University of Texas and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After college I was hired by a large multinational and was sponsored for a Master's degree. I recognize that I was elitist when it came to the rank and file, in particular with the blue collar workers. I had a reputation, much worse than I imagined. And it's that reputation that got me in trouble.

I went to a field office to implement a new system. The office manager disliked me from the moment she met me, I wasn't invited to lunch, not even told where I could get lunch. She went by the office I borrowed and pulled the door closed. When I confronted her she was quick to tell me I wasn't welcome there. No one had ever treated me like that, not to my face.

I asked for a recommendation for dinner, the woman told me about this fish house. Next to the fish house was a C&W dancehall. I went to get a beer and sat at the bar listening to the band. The shop superintendent walked in and when he saw me he turned and walked away. I followed, confronted him and he told me to get my job done and leave. At that point I cried. I asked him what had I done? He stared me down until I was trembling inside, I could hardly control my tears. I ran out, went to the motel and returned to my office early the next day. My boss told me to 'get my ass down there' and finish the job.

Long story short, I was put in my place. I never managed to be accepted in the field, and my tenure in the company ended shortly after. It's hard to look in the mirror, and see what others see in you. A friend, male of course, dressed me down and yanked me off my high horse. Thank you, but my feelings were severely hurt. He has toned me down, he's doesn't hold back when I'm a bitch. I work for a non profit, depend on him to pay the bills. I'll say it because it needs to be said, you may be your father's princess but to everyone else your just one more nobody. You have to earn your place, I'm working on that, mostly with him. I don't ever want him to call me a bitch again.
