Prejudice Is Always With Us, Now And Then

Back when we were kids in Junior High there was this girl I liked. She didn't like me, or so I thought. At high school basketball game I sat beside her on the bleachers and reached around and she got stiff as a board. I put my hand on her waist and pulled her to me. After a moment I moved my hand up her back and pulled her to me by the shoulder. She was stiff, looked straight ahead. I told her that I wanted her to be my girlfriend and she needed to settle down. I kissed her cheek, she didn't move just held her breath.

At halftime I told her to come with me and we went outside and I told her she may not agree but she was my girlfriend. I had told my friends that I was going to make her my girlfriend so I was going to kiss her on the lips, inside where everyone could see us. A practice kiss outside, I pulled her against me, I could feel her breasts against my chest, the kiss lasted until she relaxed her lips and I got my tongue into her mouth. I told her not to act that way inside, I wanted her to open her lips and kiss me back.

We went back inside, the kids were all hanging out by the concession stand. I stood her against the wall and put my hand on her breast and kissed her and she let me put my tongue in her mouth. One last grab of her breast and I took her by the hand. She was my girlfriend.

The word got back to her parents and they told her she couldn't see me. She was Church of Christ and I was Jewish and there could be nothing between us. Nothing. She didn't even show up at school, her brother brought the message to me. I went to her house, I wasn't let in and her father told me that they didn't approve of people like us and not to bother her again, or they would call the police.

I went to her house again after school and she was alone. Her brother told me that her mother taught piano and wasn't home and her brother played on the basketball team and he was at practice. I gave her a choice, she could be my girlfriend and I would take her to live with us or nothing else. She was my girlfriend, so we packed some of her clothes and I walked her to my house. When my mother got home and I told her that she was here to live with us, my mother called her mother once she got home and they came to get her. Before she left I put this ring on her finger, it was a fantasy j*welry ring, but she was to wear it every day.

It was the worst time. At school she was stiff and I couldn't see her out of school. If she went anywhere she went with a bodyguard of girlfriends and she was surrounded so that I couldn't sit by her. At another home basketball game I waited for her to come out of the bathroom and told her bodyguard friend to stand down and let us talk. I asked her where the ring was and she told me her mother took it away. I kissed her, she relented and let the kiss go on. I told her that she was my girlfriend so not to get any fancy ideas.

I gave her a message at school that I was going to see Young Frankenstein and I expected her to be there, to tell her bodyguard to let her sit with me. I put her hand on my lap, she held my [pants] very tight in her fist. I put my arm around her shoulder and cupped her breast. I told her to raise her neck so I could kiss her and mark her with a love bite. While I was kissing her neck I lost control in my pants. She leaned back to get kissed on the lips. She went home with the love bite, for her mother and father to see that she was my girlfriend.

In the tenth grade, we saw each other at school all day and that one afternoon she went to her friend's house. Everything had been prepared, her menstrual cycle documented, the right number of days past her last period. Sex was on her friends bed. Her friend held her hand while she got pregnant. We were both 16 and they had to let us get married. I reminded her that in the Jewish tradition she was supposed to have a boy. The boy was born and we named him Saul after my grandfather. She converted to Judaism and we got married after she turned 18.

And that's the story of how I met her and married her. We've been together these 47 years. She has been a good wife and learned all the Jewish traditions and raised our two boys and girl to be good Jews and Americans. Our son lives in Israel, our daughter in Dallas and our youngest son in LA. Her parents have always been difficult. Their dislike of Jews softened but her mother is deeply religious and still sees the Jews as the m****rs of Christ.

I write this so that people understand that discrimination has been part of America, traditions die hard, and mixed cultures are sometimes necessary to create one culture. My parents were more understanding intellectually, they were college professors. Their only demand was that she convert to Judaism, they in their way were just as prejudiced. And she was the girl, I am almost certain that had my sister found herself with a Church of Christ boy she would never have allowed to marry him. Even if he converted. In those days a girl never disobeyed the head of the family. She married after my father gave his blessing, a good Jewish boy from Boston.
