One Lucky Day I Ran Away
In 1984 I ran away from my grandmother, a drunk woman who hated having to look after us. I left my 16 year old sister behind. I met a man who gave me a ride and he offered to go back for my sister. We waited for her to get out of school and I suppose we forced her in the car and drove across state lines to this man's town.
In order to keep my sister there he married my sister who answered yes when she was asked. We lived with him, we went to school, my sister was the woman and took care of all the cooking and housecleaning, in addition to being his wife in the bedroom. She had a couple of kids before graduating high school and she was happy like you can't believe.
I went into the service, did my four years, went to college after the service, my sister had two more kids. She was a natural even if she was young, if only I had a mom like her. My nieces and nephews were the luckiest kids in the world to have her as a mom. The man, her husband, took his family obligations seriously. Sure he was older and couldn't help but treat as dumb kids.
It's hard to believe almost 40 years have passed from the day I walked away. I thank my lucky stars that we went back for my sister. What a woman, what a mom, what a wife she turned out to be, Thank you, thank you, thank you God.
