My Rookie Mistake
I got married to a guy I dated off and on for a year. I suppose that after the fact I was the one that pushed for the marriage. I was 28 and he was 35 so the age difference was so bad. He had a good job and I had a more or less job but between the two of us we made pretty good money. We moved into a new apartment for both of us.
He had a two day conference in New York, a Thu Fri thing and since I had never been to New York and we hadn't taken a Honeymoon he suggested I fly up Sat morning and we use the weekend to see a show and do some tourist stuff. My boss told me that I could have Fri off and she had the department secretary help me rearrange my ticket so that I could fly up Thu and arrive around 8. I was exited and thought I would surprise my husband so I didn't tell him about it.
I arrived at the hotel and using my new DL with my new name I got the front desk to give me a replacement key telling me that I had lost my other one. I caught the elevator and went up and put the key in the door and walked in. Two suitcases, a man and a woman's, a woman's toiletries in the bathroom, her birth control on the bathroom countertop. They weren't there, but it looked like they had changed to go out. I checked the man's luggage and it was my husband's. I was shocked and hurt and backed out and went back to the lobby deciding what to do.
I found a place to sit that was off to one side and waited, and around 11 I saw my husband come back with this woman, I recognized her, she worked for him . They went straight for the elevator and I followed, taking another elevator to the floor. They were in the room when I walked in, using the key that I had gotten earlier, pulling my luggage with me. I confronted them. She had already taken her dress off and he was standing in his socks and his shirt tail was out of his pants. He spoke first "What are you doing here?". It was awkward, or worse. I stood my ground and she apologized, I told her not to apologize, and to stay sill, I wasn't staying.
I got another room at another hotel with the help of the front desk, and flew home the next day and by the time my husband got back I had packed my stuff and was out of the apartment. I didn't care about the wedding g*fts, the toaster and cheeseboard and that kind of stuff. He tried to make it sound like a normal thing, and it was partly my fault for surprising him. I ruined his affair, and he ruined our marriage and I filed for divorce. Without any property to speak of, and no children, I was divorced in six months.
Older and wiser and much more aware I go back to what my mother's best friend told me when I got my divorce, rookie mistake. Don't surprise your husband. Don't get between your husband and his lover, you will lose every time. And I did. I should have just stuck to the plan. Today I don't care that much that my husband has a lover, it really isn't that big of a deal, as long as she's nice and she cares about him. Men with lovers make better husbands, but I let my emotions take over. I never made that mistake again.
