A Little Off The Top
I got hired three years ago at a convenience store gas station. We're in a resort area so we get a lot of tourists. We also are at the edge of a low income neighborhood so we have a lot of low income people come in as well. I just work as a clerk. I hardly ever see my boss. I come in the afternoon and work until midnight then lock up. The boss comes in the morning to pick up the deposit.
So two things that started this. First we don't scan anything. And second, hardly any price is marked. We have a price list which is like a thousand items long and prices change from week to week. I look at the item and enter in the code and the price pops up. I found out they don't actually track the inventory. I also found out that most customers have no idea how much anything costs and few ask. Not many question prices and the later in the evening it is the more likely people are willing to over pay for otherwise cheap things. for example a 20 oz bottle of soda is supposed to be $2.09. But I have found out that I can charge $2.59 and nobody ever complains except for the occasional regular who only pays $2.09 in the morning. In such cases I will re ring the item at the correct price. We do a lot of business in the evening. I have about 20 or so customers per hour from 4pm to midnight and even more on weekends. I was hired at minimum wage and that's $11 an hour now which isn't much. So I'm pretty good with math and can calculate the difference between what I'm supposed to charge and what I do and the difference I skim off the top and put in my pocket. My boss is too cheap to buy a camera to point at me so he has no idea I'm ripping off his customers and so far in the three years I've worked there nobody has complained. That may not seem like much fifty cents here, a dollar there but I have saved up enough to buy a house and pay cash. So he buys a sandwich for $2.50 and prices it at $7.50 but I charge $8. Whose stealing more? He buys a case of water for $2.50 and prices it at $12.00 and I charge $12.99. Lottery and gas are about the only two things I can't do this with because those things are tracked by the government. He's always complaining about how expensive it is to buy his merchandise. He goes to big box stores and has memberships in other places and buys in bulk and pays a fraction of what the suppliers do then he charges over twice what the other convenience stores do.
