Owner Of The Firm, Blinded By The New Normal

We hired a part time receptionist for the busy season. She wasn't our normal fit, she was 35 and had a high school education from out of state. She was competent enough but didn't fit in. The women said she was bossy and the men said she was a bitch. One woman, told me in confidence that she was butch and had been dropped by her long time lover. Well, that would explain her attitude.

I got a complaint a couple of weeks later from a girl in accounting. She had been approached and the woman stared at her boobs and asked her what size bra she wore, and offered to take her shopping for a better fitting. She also complained that the woman had waited outside her stall in the bathroom for her to come out so that she could walk with her back to her office. Was any of this HR? or was it just a thing when men did it. I turned to my favorite interpreter of policy and she told me that the receptionist had been talking incessantly about the girl in accounting. And, in her opinion, she had a crush on her. Still, was it an HR matter or not? No clear rules, in part because there was no gender disparity and the receptionist was obviously lower on the totem pole than the professional accountant.

I called in the accountant and asked her to tell me what was going on, and my favorite interpreter of the rules so that there would be another woman in the room. The accountant started by asking me if I thought her boobs looked nice, if I thought her bra was the wrong size? How the hell was I suppose to answer. My favorite interpreter of the rules answered for me, yes she had a nice rack, but getting fitted for the right size bra was also nice, maybe the receptionist knew something about that. The accountant said she didn't want the receptionist touching her tits. She used the word 'tits'. My favorite interpreter of the rules asked the accountant to stand and got behind her and cupped her breasts in her hands and lifted them up a little and asked me if they looked better like that. I nodded, and they agreed they would go bra shopping together.

After that session I asked the accountant to come back to my office, why did her coworker lifting her tits not cause a problem, especially because they did it in front of me? Well, they were friends and friends help friends. And the receptionist? No, she's gay and all she wants to do is cop a feel of her tits. I told her that her complaint was groundless and for her to get along with the receptionist. She answered if I was telling her to go out with the gay woman? I said no, at work, be civil. What about the bathroom thing? Forget it and move on.

They went shopping for bras and underwear that weekend and both of them came back telling me that they had new bras and if their tits looked better. I said I don't remember. Sure you do, you notice everything they said and they had done it for me. And then, to make things totally uncomfortable my favorite interpreter of the rules pulled up her skirt and asked me if I liked her new panties, she usually didn't wear that style but it made her legs look longer. The accountant piped in and said she liked them.

As the senior member of the firm I had an issue on my hands. Two women who had lost all boundaries and were strutting their stuff for me, fishing for compliments. When the receptionist stopped bothering the accountant and had turned her attention to Marla in purchasing, the girls settled down. And Marla, well she's gay so they'll get along.

A week passed and everything was quiet on the civil front when the accountant called and she came up to visit with me. She closed the door. She told me in a quiet voice, almost impossible to hear, that she was secretly in love with, guess who? My interpreter of the rules. They were both gay so that was ok, and she wanted my blessing for them. Blessing for what? Well now that they were out with me they wanted to get married and wanted me to be the Godfather at their wedding, give them to each other. And then she showed me the ring.

They went ahead and had an afterwork engagement reception, making sure that they let their coworkers know that I had approved and blessed them and was giving them to each other. The receptionist was nice enough to engage her network for a harpist and their other friends helped get the venue and the decorations. Six week later we had a wedding in my department and I was the officiating Godfather, as they had me get certified by an internet ministry to the gay community.

All is well that ends well. I learned a lot, I was too blind to see, and two of my favorite employees are now tied at the hip and looking for a house to buy (I hope they aren't looking for me to help with the down payment).
