A Wife, A Mother, Married, Not Single

Female to male dynamic. Submissive to dominant. Ingratiated to gracious. His pleasure is your pleasure. Homemaker to breadwinner. Mother to father. Caretaker to protector.

These were the rules I grew up under. For the better part of my twenties and thirties I fought these stereotypes. I turned forty, single, never married. I met a man from the south, Baton Rouge, big, hairy, drinker, cigar smoker. He called me little lady, asked me if I was a full blooded Jap, his grandfather survived Okinawa.

Submissive to dominant. Homemaker to breadwinner. His pleasure was my pleasure. Married, Japanese American in Baton Rouge. Red neck country. Mother to father. Caretaker to protector.

My mother was concerned I didn't marry Japanese, my mother was happy I finally understood. Grandmother.

Married not single. Female to male.
