Accepting His Proposal

I worked with a man for several years and we were more than colleagues. I was turning 29 and he took it upon himself to talk to me. You aren't married, you don't have any prospects, you have no children, you don't own a house. Basically I was backsliding. He brought me a proposal.

Get married to him, he would buy me a house, have two or more kids, finish my degree. He didn't demand marital sex. I discussed his proposal with my mother, she hemmed and hawed around before asking me if I had a better plan. You aren't getting younger.

I agreed, it was a civil ceremony, I moved to his house, got pregnant, quit work, enrolled in city college to get my associates degree. He kept his word all around and I kept mine. We don't have a real marriage, not in the usual sense. It's a marriage of convenience.

Two closeted gay people.
