My Life Is Ruined And I'm Not Exaggerating
I'm 26, foreign student, lesbian, in the closet with everyone except a very small group and my roommate and partner. We are both alumni of the same liberal arts college, both studied on needs based scholarships, working in the US on temporary visas. I have an uncle who started asking very specific information. He put me in a box that left me with no answer or admitting I'm a lesbian. I didn't answer.
Three weeks ago he showed up uninvited, went through our apartment, drawers, bed covers, bathroom, kitchen, living room, mail on the kitchen table. Our bed was unmade, the bed in the guest room unused, our clothes in the dresser and closet, nothing in the dresser or closet in the guest room. I had to admit we sleep together and he forced me to admit we were lesbians, actually the first time I used the L word with someone outside my circle.
The up and up is my family will not support me. Effective immediately my monthly support is cut off. I can't change jobs, if I could get a job paying a lot more. My partner earns less than I do. We depend on my support for the apartment. I have two weeks to get my things together and return to my country.
I have a strict religious family, every minute with them is hell on earth. If I disobey I am cut off completely and I have to return regardless in order to get a different visa. My visa expires in four months without any hope of another visa. I can't afford to live without my support from my family. My uncle speaks for all of them. To return home I have to disavow my gay life and submit to a religious program for conversion. I am not exaggerating.
Americans have it easy, in my country being gay is illegal. Men have it worse, women are sent to 'schools' and married.
Good bye, I will never be free again.
