Cultural Differences Ruined My Life
Going back to junior high a boy came to our school and he picked me out to be friends. We lived in the same neighborhood and rode the same bus. I guess I was raised to be nice and not offend. I 'had' to be his friend. My parents were all about being careful and being nice.
As I got to know him his parents were immigrants from a Catholic country and my mother put up her hand, I couldn't be friends with a Catholic. My father said my mother ruled on that, sorry. But by then I had a deep crush on him and I disobeyed, was his friend at school and on the bus, actually holding hands on the bus. And lying to my mother.
A girl in our class had a boy girl party. At the party my friends, girls, pushed me to kiss him. He looked at me funny, but in the end we kissed. Forward girls were not respected in his country. My relationship with him soured, he saw less of me for being forward, my parents didn't approve of him for being Catholic. I was 15, pretty heavy for me.
I apologized, he reluctantly forgave me.
Then one day he came to my house. My mother bit her tongue and told me to get rid of him. So we talked outside on the lawn. Bottom line I had to decide, was I promised to him? If not he couldn't see me. Again I was 15.
Did I reject my parents or him. I had to reject him.
I'm now turning forty, I'm still in love with him. He married a good Catholic girl and she has five kids. I wanted one, and he gave me a baby who is now one. My parents are older, still hard nosed Church of Christ, with a grandson born out of wedlock son of a Catholic man. I'm the worse disappointment of their lives. Unmarried, adulteress, single mother, side plate of a married man.
