Old And Alone

There are two types of women. Those who understand their place as assigned to them and those who are destined to a life of loneliness, not accepting their place. In my grandmother's day lonely spinsters were rare, in my generation they are everywhere. So many times I speak to these lonely women, some divorced, others never married. But mostly exhibit attitudes rebellious to their given place in society. Something widowed women alone don't exhibit.

My job takes me around the world. I have memories of happy homes, husband's, children. Then I started to notice more and more never married and divorced women exhibiting an attitude negating their given place in society and living lonely lives. Again widowed women living alone do not exhibit the same attitudes and are not 'lonely'.

I agree that my observations are observations, not some academic controlled study. However, I am a good observer of human behavior with years of professional observations. One last thing, in the interest of full disclosure, I am an unmarried, never married marketing professional. I chose, poorly, to advance my career over electing to get married. My mother told me then, you are choosing to walk alone, to not fulfill yourself under the sun. She was right, I long for a home, the company of a man, the g*ft of children and grand children. Once upon a time I thought I was above that, I was wrong. Sex is not love. Friends do not make a spouse. A house is not a home. A neighbor's child, a niece or nephew are not your children. And now I am alone.

The problem is, you think women have a specific place in society and that they aren’t individuals who can do whatever they please. Women don’t have to exist to only push out kids
Women don’t WANT to exist to only push out kids.

I am a 65 year old woman, a lawyer by profession, worked in industry and was Legal Counsel for Multinational Firm for many years. I was born and raised in the East, and attended college and law school there. I was an ardent feminist when I became a lawyer, and determined to change the world. Woman Power.

I moved with my job to the South West, a more conservative part of the country and rose in the ranks thanks to hard work (and promotions because I was a woman, not because I was the best). I kept men at bay, to me they were the enemy. I held rallies, I was an activist for women's rights. I had other nick names at work, but few dared call me that to my face. I selected and promoted women, as legal counsel I had only woman lawyers and paralegals, and one gay man as a department secretary.

In my fifties I started to feel the weight of my life. My brother's family for Thanksgiving, my sister's for Christmas. I went to be alone and I wasn't always welcome at the table. My sister told me to keep my mouth shut about my ideas around her daughters, don't poison them. At work I met a woman, long married and with children and she told me about her days, her weekends, her children. She was proud of her husband, and her life. And she told me that in college she was a woman's libber, until she got married and had to grow up. And that was my clue, I had never really grown up, here I was as ignorant as I was at 21 but 55. I went on a trip with her to Europe, my first. I saw that she had accomplished anything she wanted, nothing held her back. Not a man, not a marriage, not children. I fact she had done what she wanted to do. And had a family too.

I am lonely. I have two dogs. Only once in my life did I have intercourse, sex, with a man. He wasn't interested in seconds. I never had sex with a woman. I look back on my life and I accomplished nothing, really. I am in the last quarter and the game is lost. I am the only one in the stands, cheering the losing side. I encouraged my nieces to get married, to find a man to share their lives, I tell them about my past and how terribly wrong I was. Women can accomplish anything they want to do and have a family, children, a marriage.

Now I am alone, I have a lot of time on my hands and I read these confessions, a bad habit that has become an obsession, trying to live the life I never had. I look at myself in the mirror, and wonder what it would be like if a man stood beside me. I masturbate a lot, much more now. I wish I had been a slut in college, a party girl in my early years of work, I imagine myself as the office whore. My fantasy, is to have been ravished in an office by Mr. A, my boss when I was 27, bent over his desk, or on my knees, or with his finger in my ass kissing me. I know girls who were, women now, but not me. He never tried anything with me.
