In The Blink Of An Eye, My Life Path Changed Forever
Very early in my career I had an incident that marked my life. I worked downtown and it was common for a group to go together to this Italian restaurant on Wednesdays when they had a special. That Wednesday I was walking ahead of the group, a step ahead, and I was talking over my shoulder when I was grabbed and thrown on the ground. This guy work mate was all over me, pulling me up into a bearhug, asking me if I was alright. The other girl told me that it wasn't my day, a split second and I would be dead. A bus came down the inside lane and I almost, but for a second and my workmate who pulled me down, got hit in the head by the mirror.
Lunch was totally trying to control my adrenaline, I was shaking the whole time. The other girl sat me beside him, on the inside in the booth. Halfway through lunch he put his arm around me and pulled my head onto his chest and told me not to worry he was going to take care of me. On the walk back to the office the other girl told me that I needed to prepare myself because you never know what happens with a near death experience. That night I couldn't sleep, I was sweating and nervous and kept playing my death scene in my head, my body on the street with my head busted apart. I called him and asked him to come get me, I didn't want to be alone.
He came with his wife, she hugged me until I stopped crying. She packed an overnight bag for me and they took me to their apartment. She called in and stayed with me to look after me. I slept a lot with her arms around me, she cradled me and rocked me. When her husband came home, we went back to my apartment with two big suitcases and packed all my clothes and personal stuff and I moved in with them. I didn't go to work for a week and she stayed with me, we spent the day talking and hugging. When her husband came home at the end of the week he told me I needed to incorporate myself in their life because as far as he was concerned I had been sent to him and he was going to take care of me from then on.
I went to work with him, rode home with him. I split duties with his wife, we went out together to do groceries, we did yoga together. One night after I was in bed she came to my room and got down on her knees beside my head and combed my hair with her hand and told me that her husband was going to come and see me. Did I need any help. She checked that I had fresh underwear and that I had brushed my teeth and wore a very loose gown. That night was my honeymoon night. Now I was permanent part of the house.
I remember all this very clearly, like if I was watching a movie again. I can feel it, I can feel his hands and his breath on my neck. I feel the moment of penetration, even if all this was 40 years ago. These last 40 years have past both quickly and slowly, I have so many memories, the day I brough my first baby home, the day we moved to Colorado and started fresh, new home, new job, new life. I don't know how to explain my total commitment to him, or his all embracing care for me. His wife never resented me, not for a single moment and I never had a moment of jealousy. It's strange really, that your deepest feeling of contentment comes from your life partner experiencing her moment of realization.
