To Quote My Stepfather, My Second Plan Is At The School Of Hard Knocks

After getting my degree, in Latin American Contemporary Art, I went looking for a job. I git an offer at the deli for the lunch hour, part time. My mother arranged for her boss to talk to me.

Her boss, a real life CEO, gave me an appointment at 3:30. He had my resume, he asked for details of course work. He ignored my work history as not relevant. His question he asked was what do you want to do? Waitress, nurse, stewardess, teacher, housewife, all classic women's jobs.

When I called him out he challenged me with my coursework, nothing remotely employable. Basically, ho back to school and get a real degree. He cautioned me about expectations, without real world skills I could expect low paying jobs, service industry, or clerical in business or government. I would not and was not suitable for a thinking position.

It hurt, my mother told me I could live at home and go to the city college and get an associates. I did LVN. My mother ended up marrying her boss. Now I had to listen to him at home. I finished a Batchelor's in nursing, I'm currently working on becoming a PA. My stepfather has been a slavedriver, but without his focus I don't think I would be so far along with my profession. My first degree is a passion, my other degree pays the bills.

I'm lucky, I have a supportive parental unit.

Do I love nursing? Curiously I do, once I found out I could be a nurse. I tell younger women you can do it too. Sorry about your degree in Social Work. Working for the State in Child Protective Services may be rewarding, but it doesn't pay the bills.
