Like My Mothers, We Took In A New Wife To Strengthen Our Home
My father turned 70, my mothers are both 68. There are four siblings two by each mother.
Fifty years ago my mothers were girls on their way to college. They started preschool together at the age of three. When they arrived at college, roommates in the women's freshman dorm, they went to orientation where they met my father, he was one of the upperclassmen giving the presentation. He thought they were pretty and told them he wouldn't know how to chose. My mothers said why choose, they went together.
And so for fifty years they have held hands, been to Paris, slept in one bed at my grandparent's farm. We came along, me and my brother born a day apart, we grew up as twins, and are tight, tight, tight. Our younger siblings appeared a few years later.
They 'girls' left college to set up a home with my father. First an apartment, then a small rental. They bought their first house when my brother and me were in the oven. We grew up pretty well I guess, we had enough to eat, a back yard, we went to a good school. Dad worked his ass off, he had two wives and four children to support. The mothers never worked outside the home, not that strange in their day.
They, my mothers, are one soul, one being. One day, I told them, I was going to have another wife to live with. It started just me, but ten years after I married I met my soul mate and she became part of our home. She gave birth to her first baby last year and she stays home. I work as does my husband, we don't have the discipline to live on one income.
