My Father, The General, Is Never Far

Excuse me if I go back and forth. I was young and had a terrible tongue. I got my face slapped for saying things that woman's mouth should never utter. I had my mouth washed out with soap that day. That day I hated him with all my heart. I had never been held down, overpowered by brute force. I had never been told to keep my mouth shut when he spoke and listen. When he stood and took his belt out of its loops, I stopped talking then, I didn't want him to whip me with his belt.

I was thirteen. He was the absolute ruler of the house I grew up in. I had many friends, and not one of them told me that their father or stepfather was that mean. I was inspected before school to make sure I was dressed right. I was fifteen and he insisted my mother check me to make sure I was still a virgin. He told me, and he meant it, a boy or man touches me and he would take care of it. I never doubted him, and my mother told me I had better believe it.

On my graduation day from college he is the first one I saw when I came out of the auditorium, then my mother, then my sister. I went to him like I always did for him to receive me, hug me, kiss me and the other things he did with me. He handed me a small box, with diamond studs and told me job well done. I was a woman now and I would from then on get women's j*welry, no longer young girl pieces, as nice as they were. I was given permission to share them with my sister, but if there was this and that there my favorites I should keep them.

As we walked to the car, I was wearing my new studs and walking funny. He swatted my rear end and told me to settle down. I was a woman, but to him I was still his charge and he made the rules and I followed them. And showing off wasn't one of the things we were allowed.

That night, after the dinner and the guests were gone, I sat with my mother and she asked me if I still had my honor, if not I should not only hang my head in shame, but never let my father know. I assured her I had my honor, untouched. I did not want to be responsible for some young man ending up in a grave. I knew the score, I know the score, I was his daughter, and that was that. And that goes for my sister too.

I was married, already an old maid of 27, after I had finished Law School. I was walked down the isle by my father, in his military bearing. When he handed me off to my husband to be, he told him face to face, at the altar, 'if you hurt her I'll kill you'. He wasn't kidding and my husband to be knew it. You are always, for everyday you walk this earth, his daughter.

My father, when I came home with a daughter of my own, held the baby in his arms and looked at me and told me that the son of bitch that was going to take her honor was already born, so care must be taken, she is to always be protected. Yes Sir, General Sir, like your daughters, she will be loved and protected.
