Bad Ending

I come from a large fucked up and disjointed family. I am and always have been clean and sober, but my family history is rife with addicts and abusers of all sorts. Due to this, I haven't spoke with a single person in my family for nearly 10 years.

My wife and I met in our mid 20's in her home state, two states over from where I grew up and where my fucked up family resides. All we knew of her family was that her mother ran away at young age to escape them, ended up marrying an older man who takes care of her, always treated my wife as his own daughter, and they have lived happily ever since.

That was until my wife got talked into doing a DNA test with with a friend of hers and found out something truly shocking. The results were a somewhat confusing but she is the sister of my first cousin, which means that her father is my shitbag uncle. After a truly ugly discussion with my mother in law, she revealed that my uncle is her father also.

So where in the foothills of Kentucky does this leave us? Our marriage, technically, isn't even legal in our state. My wife is now scared to have a child with me do to the birth defects inbreeding can cause. The limited sex we have had since we found out has been awkward at best. The relationship is strained and our future together looks bleak.

They don't have birth control in Kentucky ? After reading this, I'd think they would pass it out free at down the general store.

This is unfortunate for sure. However, I think you both also need to putt some faith in fate. Birth defects can certainly occur in sister-brother related however they are much less likely in 1ST cousins.
Your actually more distant genetical, than step brother and sister.
I also believe there 19 states in the US that allows for 1st cousins to marry.
Moving to one of those states will allow you to seek genetic counseling to verify there is a low risk of genetic familiarity defects if you had kids. Love each other. Sounds like you both deserve it after your childhoods.

To #1, Don't you know that birth control is a sin? I'm being sarcastic, obviously, but deeply GOP strongholds do generally believe that. If it's not strictly illegal, it is shunned and shamed by everybody you would know.

It's a sad world. Play It All Night Long

So, you're cousins. Meh.

Big deal. Get over it! Literally nobody cares. You can marry your cousin in most of the countries and states in the world.

Possibility for birth defects from the first cousins as parents are lower than the base percentage for any ordinary parents.

By the way, the code for this message, is "vohmzog". That sounds german.

Commenter #5 is right.
And they used this same ploy to ruin the ending of Game of Thrones.
That, and she suddenly goes mad after being perfectly sane for 7 previous seasons.
Gimme a break, paleeze ... (finger in throat)

So this is supposed to still matter now, in the 21st century?
Even if it did, the fact that you didn't know is enough to excuse the both of you.
Sounds to me like you want to make an issue out of it.

BTW to Commenter #4
Get your history right: the Mason-Dixon Line never extended to Kentucky
