With A Sword At My Throat And The Cliff Behind Me...

I'm a foreign national in a post graduate internship in Washington DC. I was offered a academic scholarship to a liberal studies school in Connecticut. I was 'housed' in a dorm with other foreign students. I spent five years and never made friends with American girls. I currently live with a girl from Xian, a girl from Mumbai and a girl from Bolivia. We share a two bedroom two bath condo. We are all liberal thinkers and outspoken lesbians. Returning to my country is not an option. My family doesn't support me, there are no jobs that pay enough for women like me. Socially ostracized and underemployed.

I've been cleaning up my social media. I need a full time job with a company to sponsor me. My only other card is to get married to an American citizen. For all the wrong reasons I would have to marry a male. I should confess that I don't have a suitable woman in the wings either. I have one 'proposal', a Cuban American from Florida, from a hard core right leaning family. He shares those views. He has told me he wants to wash my ears out and refocus me, in the bedroom.

I have nine weeks before my visa expires, I have no prospects for legal full time employment. My skill set is not STEM or "Tech". A job maybe, but I have to get my work visa or residency. Back to getting married. I've approached my father and uncle. I need their permission to marry outside the 'society'. My Grandmother wants me married, period. No woman has ever married as old as I am.

The Devil you know, or social annihilation back in my country. I have to take my chances with a sword to my throat, and get an American passport.

Ignore #1. I would rather that my daughter be in a loving relationship with another woman than an abusive relationship with a bigot. Love is love.

But be careful who you marry. You may find that marrying a man just to get citizenship might not be worth it. Make sure that you can live with that man.

You struck a cord with me. I married for financial security, social acceptance and I wanted children. I did not love him, but he loved me. It took me a long time to learn to love him, walking my life with him has been fortunate, so many friends and relatives picked poorly. He knew I was a lesbian, we went through the change orientation phase, which doesn't work. I never thought that I should divorce, I buckled down and I have a great life. I intentionally did not speak to that part of my life, because that does not enter into your decision.

Are there any options within the lesbian community to marry for citizenship? Can you continue your education and extend your student visa? Is there time to investigate options in Canada?
Good luck!
