Living Within The Patriarchy

I grew up the youngest grandchild. My family lost our grandfather before I was born and my uncle by marriage to my Dad's elder sister took his place as PATRIARCH. To all women his title is Señor. To us, as underage girls, Tio.

When a new baby arrives the new mother takes her baby to him to be named. He can agree with the suggested name or choose one himself. My mother wanted Jenny, he decided my name would be Cristina Maria. He never approves foreign names.

As the youngest I grew up his favorite. As with all girls in his presence you wear a dress. The 'rule' was born a virgin, a virgin to your wedding bed. As Catholics, we are encouraged to marry early, start families early. Within the year of getting married. School and religion were the center of growing up. Acceptable professions for women are medicine, law, education. Police, military, engineering are prohibited. In those professions were hombrunas, butch lesbians.

I went to college at a selected North Eastern private institutions. I chose journalism against my uncle's permission. I met a girl there, wore pants and braless crop tops and I moved in with her, and slept with her. I cut my hair short, worked out, joined an all lesbian women's political club. I marched on Pride topless. Pictures somehow got back to my uncle. He end my father arrived unexpected, they made me confess that we slept in the only bed.

I was taken home to my country that night, I was married to a new doctor who had just finished his residency, delivered my first baby within the year. My uncle approved of my son's name. My husband is one of six children, I'm one of five. My husband wants a large family. My aunt told me to suck it up, he won't give in on the girlfriend or a one or two kid family. Don't embarrass him or challenge him out in the open. To negotiate with my husband for a nice young woman who is my special friend. Let her know, and she will talk with my uncle. She has to be special so my uncle likes her, so pick carefully.

I'm assuming that now you're living in Spain or Latin America since you use Spanish words. If that's the case, you can divorce your husband and return to the USA. There are laws in those countries and women aren't slaves of the patriarchs in their families. Break the chains that are in your own mind.
