I Was Lucky, I Could Not Be Herd To Tell About It

I went hiking and got lost in the woods. I spent the night uncovered and cold. I went around in circles, slipped, twisted an ankle. I had bruises, cuts and scr**es by the second night. Limping I came across an old pickup with the keys in it. I called out but no one answered. I started the truck and turned around thinking it came from somewhere, going forward who knows if there was civilization. After an hour I came on a building. A closer look it was an old barn, nothing else in it. I was also running out of gas. I decided to spend that night in the barn.

It was the third day, I hadn't eaten, I drank water and I got diarrhea. My ankle was swollen I couldn't stand on it. My scratches were red getting infected. The Forest Ranger that found me told me he had to evacuate me. To stay put, he would go get help. I sat there for what seemed forever before an all terrain vehicle showed up to evacuate me.

After being bandaged, loaded up with antibiotics, fed and rehydrated, I learned that I had come across the pickup of a fugitive. I heard the voices, how lucky I was, I could have slipped worse and died out there. The Ranger came by and gave me a lecture, just who did I think I was to go hiking alone in the woods? And the fugitive had been caught in the same old barn I had spent the night in.

What happened next was out of my control. Call it what you want, I let the Ranger nurse me back to health and I slept with him. It's been a while, we live in a cabin, with a little one. I stick to where I know and don't go off wandering. My Ranger man isn't one for talking, he has a mutt he calls Dawg, who he leaves behind to protect us. He does his job in the wilderness, every day he leaves I pretend to be okay with it. I'm not, I'm scared of the wilderness.

Just need a compass and a map. GPS doesn’t work in the trees. Don’t be afraid-be empowered by education. Navigation isn’t that hard.
